Israel's daylight saving rules

Israeli summer time used to be a political issue. For years it ended before Yom Kippur, often in September, so that the fast would finish an hour earlier in the evening. A 2013 law lengthened it: clocks now go forward at 2:00 AM on the Friday before the last Sunday of March and back at 2:00 AM on the last Sunday of October. The autumn change matches Europe; the spring change comes two days earlier than in the EU, so for one weekend each March Tel Aviv is three hours ahead of London instead of two.

Jerusalem, Haifa, Eilat and the rest of Israel share the same clock. The city lies at about 34.8° east, close to the 30th meridian that UTC+2 follows, so solar noon falls around 11:39 AM in winter and 12:42 PM in summer.

The Israeli week

Most offices work Sunday to Thursday, roughly 9:00 to 18:00, and Friday is a short day for shops and services before Shabbat begins at sunset. Public transport largely stops from Friday evening until Saturday night. The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange moved its trading week to Monday through Friday at the start of 2026, aligning it with markets abroad, though many businesses still treat Sunday as a working day. Sunset on Fridays matters in practice: around 4:40 PM in late December and close to 7:50 PM in June.
