EET to EST

Athens, Bucharest, Helsinki and Kyiv are 7 hours ahead of New York for most of the year. For about three weeks in March and one week around the end of October the gap is only 6 hours, because the US and Europe change their clocks on different Sundays. 3:00 PM in Athens is usually 8:00 AM in New York.

The weeks when the gap is six hours

Eastern European Time is UTC+2 in winter and UTC+3 (EEST) in summer; New York is UTC−5 and UTC−4. Most of the year the difference is 7 hours. The US moves to daylight time on the second Sunday of March, but Europe waits until the last Sunday of March, so for two or three weeks New York is already on EDT while Athens is still on EET, and the gap is 6 hours. In autumn Europe falls back on the last Sunday of October and the US a week later, on the first Sunday of November, giving another 6-hour week.

EET covers Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Finland and the three Baltic states. Egypt also uses UTC+2 and brought back summer time in 2023, but on its own dates, from the last Friday of April to the last Thursday of October. Turkey left EET in 2016 and stays on UTC+3 all year.

Engineers, shipowners and Astoria

Romania, Ukraine and Bulgaria are major software-engineering destinations for American companies, and Finland exports games and network technology. Teams in Bucharest or Kyiv usually overlap with New York in their afternoon: 3:00 to 6:00 PM local time is 8:00 to 11:00 AM in New York, or 9:00 AM to noon during the six-hour weeks.

Greece's links to New York go back generations, from the Greek community in Astoria, Queens, to the shipowners whose fleets make Greece one of the world's largest ship-owning nations and whose offices work closely with New York finance. For Central Europe, one hour closer to New York, see Central European to Eastern time.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Athens only 6 hours ahead of New York in March?
The US switches to daylight time on the second Sunday of March and Europe on the last Sunday, so for those weeks only New York has moved its clocks forward.

Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, all with summer time from the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October.
