PDF to PNG Converter

Turn each page of a PDF into a lossless PNG image, so text, charts and diagrams stay razor-sharp when you drop them into slides, documentation, a website or a chat. Choose the resolution and the pages, then download every image in one numbered ZIP.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the PDF

Add one PDF or up to 20 at once, each up to 95 MB.

  2. 2

    Choose resolution and pages

Resolution starts at 150 DPI. Raise it to 300 for print or zooming in, and set Pages to Selected pages with a range like 2-4 if you only need part of the document.

  3. 3

    Convert to PNG

Press Convert to PNG. Each page becomes its own image, numbered in page order inside one ZIP, or as separate downloads if you switch Download as.

When to convert a PDF to PNG rather than JPG

PNG and JPG both turn a page into pixels, but they disagree on what to throw away. JPG compresses in 8 × 8 blocks and smooths fine detail, which suits photographs but leaves faint smudges around black letters on white paper. PNG compresses without losing anything, so each letter, hairline and table border looks exactly as it was rendered. For pages that are mostly text, line art, charts or UI mockups, PNG is the right output.

Typical jobs: putting a slide from a PDF deck into a new presentation, adding a page of a manual to a help-center article, sharing one chart from a report in Slack, or uploading a form page to a site that only accepts images.

JPG is better when the PDF is a scan or full of photos, because a scanned page has paper texture that PNG cannot compress well, and the PNG can end up several times larger. If your pages are photo-heavy, switch Convert to to JPG or use PDF to JPG directly.

PDF

Portable Document Format

PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

PNG

Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

People pull PNG images out of a PDF to place one sharp page, chart or diagram into slides, wikis, design files or a web page that cannot embed a PDF; the reverse direction packs loose images into one document for sending.

Why 72 DPI matches the PDF's own size

PDF measures pages in points, and one point is 1/72 of an inch. An A4 page is 595 × 842 points, a US Letter page 612 × 792. Rendering at 72 DPI therefore gives one pixel per point, the smallest useful image. Doubling the DPI doubles both sides and quadruples the pixel count, so a 300 DPI page has about 17 times as many pixels as the 72 DPI version and a correspondingly larger file.

Because the PDF stores text and vector graphics as shapes, a higher DPI genuinely adds detail: the renderer draws the letters again at the finer grid. Scanned PDFs are different. Their pages are already images, usually at 200 or 300 DPI, and rendering them above that resolution only enlarges existing pixels. For scans, match the scan resolution, or check our guide to splitting PDF files if you only need a few pages of a long document.

PDF to PNG: answers

What DPI should I use to convert a PDF to PNG?

150 DPI for screens, slides and chat; it makes an A4 page 1240 × 1754 px, sharp on a laptop and a phone. 300 DPI for print, OCR or detailed drawings you will zoom into. Above 300 DPI the files grow quickly while most monitors show no difference.

Why is my PNG so much bigger than the PDF?

A PDF stores text as font instructions that take a few bytes per letter, while a PNG stores every pixel. A text page that is 50 KB as a PDF can be several hundred KB as a 150 DPI PNG and more at 300 DPI. If size matters more than crispness, PDF to JPG gives much smaller files.

Can I get a PNG with a transparent background from a PDF?

Yes, tick Transparent background under Advanced settings and the empty page area becomes transparent instead of white. This only works where the page itself has no painted background; a PDF exported from a slide with a colored fill keeps that fill.

How do I convert just one page of a PDF to PNG?

Set Pages to Selected pages and type the page number, for example 7. For the cover only, choose First page only.

Can Adobe Acrobat Reader save a PDF page as PNG?

Not the free Reader. Exporting PDF pages as images is part of the paid Acrobat versions. On a Mac, Preview can export a page as PNG through File → Export, one page at a time.

Is the text in the PNG still searchable?

No. Once a page is an image, letters are pixels. If you need the words as text, use PDF to text or keep the PDF alongside the images.
