ODS to XLSX rewrites an OpenDocument spreadsheet as an Excel workbook, keeping every sheet's values and tab names, so a file built in LibreOffice Calc lands in Excel's own format.

Who sends ODS files and who needs XLSX

ODS is the native spreadsheet format of LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice, the free suites used by schools, public administrations and anyone who prefers not to pay for Office. Several governments made OpenDocument their reference format for exchanging editable files; the UK Cabinet Office chose it in 2014. That leaves a steady flow of .ods files heading toward people whose desktop, phone and accounting add-ins all assume Excel.

The person converting is usually on one side of that gap: a LibreOffice user who was asked for an Excel file, or an Excel user who received an ODS and has to re-upload it somewhere strict. Coming from older Excel rather than Calc? XLS to XLSX handles the Office 97–2003 format, and Mac users with Numbers files can use Numbers to Excel.

What carries over from ODS to XLSX

Text, numbers and dates move cell for cell, sheet for sheet, in the same order. Dates stay dates: ODS records them as ISO date values, XLSX as serial numbers with a date format, and the converter translates one into the other. Long text, Unicode names and empty cells are preserved, and the first sheet stays the first tab when the file opens.

What does not travel is presentation and logic: conditional formatting, cell colors, charts, comments, macros written in LibreOffice Basic and named ranges. If the file is a finished report with charts, LibreOffice's own Save As is the better route. If it is a data sheet that someone will sort, filter or import, the converted workbook is exactly what they need, and clean values are often easier to work with than a stranger's formulas.

ODS and XLSX format facts

ODS

OpenDocument Spreadsheet

ODS is the spreadsheet format of the OpenDocument standard, maintained by OASIS since 2005 and approved by ISO. It is the native format of LibreOffice Calc and supports multiple sheets, formulas, charts and styles. Excel and Google Sheets can open and save ODS, though some functions and formatting may differ. Several public bodies prefer it as an open standard.

XLSX

Microsoft Excel workbook

XLSX is Microsoft Excel's default workbook format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard. It stores multiple sheets, formulas, formatting, charts, pivot tables and data validation in a ZIP package of XML. It supports over a million rows per sheet and is the default exchange format for business spreadsheets. Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers open XLSX, though macros and advanced features may not carry over.

ODS goes to XLSX when a spreadsheet leaves the LibreOffice world: a report for a client on Microsoft 365, a template for an Excel-only portal, or a file for a coworker who should not have to wonder what .ods is.

ODS to XLSX questions

Excel can open ODS files, so why convert at all?

Excel has read and written ODS since Office 2007 Service Pack 2, but the receiver is often not Excel. Upload forms check for the .xlsx extension, scripts built on Excel libraries expect OOXML, and colleagues double-click files on phones where ODS support is patchy. An XLSX removes the question.

What happens to my LibreOffice formulas?

This converter moves data, so each formula cell arrives holding its last calculated value. That is what most recipients need. If the workbook must stay live, open it in LibreOffice and use File › Save As with the Excel 2007-365 type, which rewrites formulas in Excel syntax.

Are ODS and XLSX both ZIP files?

Yes. Rename either to .zip and you will find XML parts inside: content.xml in an ODS, one sheet file per tab in an XLSX. They are equally open on paper; the difference is which applications treat each one as home.

Will a sheet with more than a million rows convert?

Both formats share the 1,048,576-row ceiling per sheet in their main applications, so any sheet that LibreOffice Calc saved will fit in Excel too. Very wide sheets are also safe since Calc 7.4, which matches Excel's 16,384 columns.

Can I convert the workbook back to ODS later?

Yes. Upload the XLSX on the data converter page and choose ODS as the output. Values and sheet tabs make the round trip unchanged.
