M4A to MP3 Converter
M4A is the format Apple uses for Voice Memos and iTunes purchases. Convert it to MP3 when the recording has to play on a car stereo, go into a school or work portal, or open in software outside Apple's world.

Constant bitrate (CBR) gives a predictable size and works on every player. Variable bitrate (VBR) spends bits where the music needs them and is usually smaller at the same quality.
Keep the source rate unless a device asks for one. 44.1 kHz is CD standard, 48 kHz is video standard, 8 kHz is used by phone systems and AMR.
Mono halves the size of lossless files and is fine for voice recordings.
16-bit is CD quality. 24-bit keeps headroom for editing and mastering; converting a 16-bit source up does not add detail.

How to use this tool
- 1
Add the M4A files
Drag in .m4a recordings or songs, up to 20 at a time and 95 MB each. On an iPhone, tap the upload area and pick from Files.
- 2
Keep 192 kbps or adjust
Bitrate starts at 192 kbps. Drop to 128 kbps for speech-only voice memos, or raise it to 256 kbps for iTunes music to match the source.
- 3
Convert to MP3
Press Convert to MP3 and download each track, or all of them as a ZIP. Titles, artist and cover art carry over when Keep tags and cover art is on.
How do I convert M4A to MP3 for free?
Upload the .m4a file, keep Convert to on MP3 at 192 kbps and press Convert to MP3. No account or install, and you can do 20 files in one batch.
Where your M4A files come from
Two Apple apps produce most of the M4A files people want to convert. Voice Memos on iPhone, iPad and Mac saves every recording as .m4a, compressed AAC by default or lossless ALAC if you change the audio quality in Settings. Lectures, interviews, band rehearsals and voice notes all start life this way. The second source is iTunes: since 2009 the iTunes Store has sold music as 256 kbps AAC without copy protection, and those purchases still sit in many libraries as .m4a files.
The files are fine on Apple devices. Problems start when they travel. Many car head units and USB players read only MP3 and WMA, some transcription services and learning portals list MP3 as the only accepted audio type, and older Windows software either refuses .m4a or plays it without the tags. MP3 has no such gaps; since Technicolor and Fraunhofer ended its licensing program in 2017, it is also free for any software to support.
Conversion itself is the easy part. The choices that matter are the bitrate and what to do with metadata: match the bitrate to what is in the file, and keep tags on so the album and cover still show in your music app. For video clips with the sound you want, the MP4 to MP3 page pulls the audio out instead.

M4A vs MP3 at a glance
M4A
MPEG-4 audio (M4A)
M4A is an audio-only MPEG-4 file, popularised by Apple's iTunes. It usually contains lossy AAC audio, but it can also hold lossless ALAC. AAC in M4A generally sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate, and the format is used for iPhone voice memos, Apple Music downloads and many podcasts. Most modern devices play M4A, but some older players, car stereos and web tools only accept MP3.

MP3 audio
MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III) is a lossy audio format developed largely at the Fraunhofer Institute and standardised by MPEG in 1993. It removes sounds the ear is unlikely to notice, shrinking music to about a tenth of CD size at 128–320 kbps. All patents have expired, and every phone, car stereo, browser and media player supports it. Quality loss is audible at low bitrates and accumulates with re-encoding.

M4A is how Apple apps save voice recordings and iTunes music, but car stereos, older MP3 players, Windows tools and many upload forms still expect MP3, so converting is what makes an Apple recording usable everywhere else.
M4A to MP3 questions
Is M4A the same as AAC?
Almost. AAC is the audio codec; M4A is the MPEG-4 file that holds it, the same container family as MP4 video. An .m4a file from iTunes or Voice Memos normally contains AAC, but Apple also uses the .m4a extension for lossless ALAC audio. This converter reads both.
What bitrate should I pick for iTunes songs?
iTunes Store purchases are 256 kbps AAC, so 256 kbps MP3 keeps the result as close to the source as MP3 allows. 192 kbps is hard to tell apart for most listeners and makes smaller files. Going above the source bitrate, to 320 kbps, only adds size.
Can I convert songs downloaded from Apple Music?
No. Songs downloaded through an Apple Music subscription are copy-protected and tied to your Apple ID, so no converter can read them. Tracks bought from the iTunes Store since 2009 are DRM-free M4A files and convert normally.
How do I get a voice memo off my iPhone as MP3?
Open the recording in Voice Memos, tap the three dots, choose Save to Files, then upload that file here from Safari. The saved copy is an .m4a, which comes back as an MP3 that plays on Windows, Android and any car stereo.
Will converting M4A to MP3 lower the quality?
A little, because both formats are lossy and the audio is decoded and encoded again. At 192 kbps or more the difference is very hard to hear. Keep the original M4A if you might need the best copy later, or convert to M4A to WAV for editing.
Why is my MP3 larger than the M4A?
AAC is more efficient than MP3, and voice memos are often recorded at a modest bitrate. Converting a small speech recording at 192 kbps can produce a bigger file than the original. Choose 96 or 128 kbps and Mono under Channels for voice.
