XLSX to CSV Converter

Import screens rarely take a workbook. Convert the XLSX into a plain, comma-separated UTF-8 file with ISO dates, the version that store platforms, mailing tools, CRMs and databases read without guessing.

Answer

How do I convert XLSX to CSV without Excel?

Upload the workbook and press Convert to CSV. The first sheet is written as comma-separated UTF-8 text: one line per row, formulas replaced by their values, dates rewritten as 2026-10-18. No Excel installation and no account needed.

Convert XLSX to CSV: what is kept and what is dropped

An XLSX file is a ZIP archive of XML parts defined by Office Open XML, standardized as ECMA-376 in 2006 and ISO/IEC 29500 in 2008, with separate parts for every sheet, shared strings, styles and charts. A CSV, as described by RFC 4180 in 2005, is a single text table: fields separated by commas, quoted with double quotes when they contain a comma or a line break.

The conversion keeps exactly one thing: the grid of values. Formatting, column widths, comments, charts, filters and other sheets are dropped, and formulas are replaced by their results. A cell displayed as $1,250.00 becomes 1250, which is what importers want; they choke on styling but read a predictable header row followed by records.

XLSX

Microsoft Excel workbook

XLSX is Microsoft Excel's default workbook format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard. It stores multiple sheets, formulas, formatting, charts, pivot tables and data validation in a ZIP package of XML. It supports over a million rows per sheet and is the default exchange format for business spreadsheets. Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers open XLSX, though macros and advanced features may not carry over.

CSV

Comma-separated values

CSV is a plain-text format for tables in which each line is a row and commas separate the columns. It has been used since the early days of computing and is described in RFC 4180, though many variants use semicolons or tabs and different text encodings. Nearly every spreadsheet, database and analytics tool can import and export it, which makes it the default format for moving data between systems. CSV stores only values, with no formulas, formatting, multiple sheets or data types.

XLSX goes to CSV when a spreadsheet has to be fed into another system: an online store, an email platform, a CRM or a database table that imports plain rows and ignores everything a workbook adds.

Why this XLSX to CSV converter writes UTF-8 and ISO dates

Excel's classic Save As option, "CSV (Comma delimited)", writes the Windows code page of your PC rather than Unicode, so names like Zoë, Łukasz or 王芳 can turn into question marks. UTF-8 is what Shopify, Google and nearly every web application expect, so it is the default here. If the CSV must open correctly when double-clicked in Excel on Windows, change Text encoding to UTF-8 with BOM.

Dates are the other trap. A cell shown as 03/04/2026 is March 4 to an American system and 3 April to a British one. ISO 8601 (2026-03-04) reads the same everywhere, so Dates starts on ISO here, and PostgreSQL or MySQL accept it straight into a DATE column. To skip the CSV step for a database, Excel to SQL writes INSERT statements instead.

DoDon't
Keep one header row at the top of the sheet you convert.Leave blank columns between data columns; they become empty fields.
Store IDs, ZIP codes and phone numbers as text in the workbook so leading zeros survive.Merge cells across the header row; only the first cell keeps its name.
Remove title rows, totals and notes above or below the table.Reopen the CSV in Excel and save it again before importing; Excel may rewrite dates and long numbers.

XLSX to CSV FAQ

Do Excel formulas survive an XLSX to CSV conversion?

Only their results do. A CSV cell holds text, so =B2*1.2 is written as the value Excel last calculated, for example 59.88. Keep the XLSX as your working copy and treat the CSV as an export you regenerate whenever the workbook changes.

Which sheet ends up in the CSV file?

The first sheet in the workbook's tab order, because a CSV holds a single table. If the data you need sits on a later tab, either move that tab to the front in Excel or set Sheets to convert to all sheets and pick the right file from the ZIP.

Why does Shopify reject my converted product file?

Shopify's product import expects UTF-8, a comma delimiter, the exact column headers from its sample template such as Handle and Title, and a file under 15 MB. A header renamed in Excel, an extra blank header column or a semicolon-separated file each cause the import to fail.

What happens to merged cells and hidden rows?

A merged range is written as its value in the first cell and empty fields for the rest, since CSV has no concept of merging. Hidden rows and columns still hold data, so they appear in the CSV unless you delete them first.

Is an online XLSX to CSV converter safe for customer lists?

Files travel over an encrypted connection, are processed only for the conversion and are deleted automatically after 30 minutes. The privacy policy explains what is and is not logged.

Can I convert the CSV back to a workbook?

Yes, with CSV to XLSX. Widths, colors and formulas from the original are not restored, because the CSV never carried them.
