How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the screenshot

Drop in one PNG, up to 95 MB. Crop away menus and sidebars first if the screenshot shows more than the table.

  2. 2

    Leave the screenshot defaults

Straighten image is off on this page because screenshots are already level, and Keep merged cells is off so every row stays sortable. Set Table language if the headers are not in English.

  3. 3

    Recognize text

Press Recognize text and download the .xlsx. Open it in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers or LibreOffice Calc.

Answer

Can a PNG screenshot of a table become an editable Excel file?

Yes. Table recognition detects the grid, reads every cell and writes a real .xlsx with numbers stored as numbers, ready for SUM, filters and charts.

Convert a PNG screenshot of a table to Excel

Screenshots are the friendliest input table recognition gets. The text is rendered by the screen, not photographed, so there is no blur, shadow or paper curl, and rows are perfectly horizontal. That is why this page turns Straighten image off: there is nothing to correct, and skipping the step avoids nudging a clean grid.

The weak point of a screenshot is resolution. A table rendered at 100% zoom on a standard monitor may use digits only 10 or 11 pixels tall. Zoom the browser or app to 150% or 200% before you capture, and the characters get enough pixels to be read reliably. High-density laptop and phone screens already capture at two or three times the pixel count, which helps.

Web tables often have zebra-striped rows, thin or missing borders and a sticky header. Table style on Auto copes with all three. If two narrow columns run together, switch it to Whitespace columns; for tables with drawn grid lines, Ruled lines is the stricter choice.

Taking a screenshot that converts cleanly

  1. Capture only the table

Use Win + Shift + S on Windows or Shift + Command + 4 on a Mac to drag a box around the table, so toolbars and ads stay out of the image.

  2. Zoom before you capture

Set the page to 150% or more. Bigger digits are read more accurately than any setting can make up for later.

  3. Close tooltips and highlights

A hovered row or an open dropdown covers cells. Move the pointer outside the table before taking the shot.

PNG

Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

XLSX

Microsoft Excel workbook

XLSX is Microsoft Excel's default workbook format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard. It stores multiple sheets, formulas, formatting, charts, pivot tables and data validation in a ZIP package of XML. It supports over a million rows per sheet and is the default exchange format for business spreadsheets. Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers open XLSX, though macros and advanced features may not carry over.

People convert PNG to Excel when the table they need exists only as a screenshot, from a dashboard, a locked report or a shared chat image, and the numbers have to be sorted, summed or charted.

After the conversion: check these cells first

Dashboards love abbreviations such as 1.2K, 3.4M and arrows or percentage badges next to values. Recognition writes what it sees, so 1.2K is kept as text rather than turned into 1200. Replace those suffixes with Find and Replace before charting. Currency symbols and thousands separators are handled when Store numbers as numbers is on, which it is by default.

Sum one numeric column and compare it with the total shown in the screenshot. If they match, the rest is almost always right. If a value looks off, it is usually a 1 read as 7 or a 5 read as 6 in small type. If you can save the web page itself, HTML to XLSX converts its tables without any recognition step.

PNG to Excel questions

How do I convert a screenshot of a table into Excel?

Save the screenshot as PNG, upload it here and press Recognize text. The tool finds the rows and columns, reads each cell and writes an .xlsx file. Check the totals once in Excel, since a single misread digit is the most common error.

Is there a faster way when the table is on a public web page?

Yes. Excel's Data > From Web (Power Query) and Google Sheets' IMPORTHTML function pull HTML tables straight from a URL with no recognition step. A screenshot is the right route when the table sits behind a login, inside an app, or is itself an image.

Why did my dark-mode screenshot convert badly?

Light text on a dark background with colored row stripes is harder to separate into cells. Switch the app or browser to its light theme before you capture, or at least avoid translucent overlays and hover highlights in the shot.

Can I convert several screenshots of one long table?

Yes. Upload them together, up to 20 images per run with the same settings, and each comes back as its own .xlsx file. Then paste the rows of the second and later files under the first sheet, removing the repeated header row each time.

Should I take the screenshot as PNG or JPG?

PNG. It stores the text edges exactly, while JPG compression adds faint smudges around small digits that make 3, 8 and 9 easier to confuse. Both Snipping Tool on Windows and the macOS screenshot shortcuts save PNG by default.

What if I just need the text, not a spreadsheet?

Use PNG to text when the screenshot holds paragraphs, a chat or a list rather than a grid. It returns plain text you can paste anywhere.
