Image to CSV Converter

When the table in your picture is headed for an import screen, a database or a script rather than a person, you want CSV. This page reads the table from a JPG, PNG, HEIC or scanned PDF and writes plain rows of values in a file any system can load.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the table image

Add up to 20 photos, screenshots or scanned PDFs, each up to 95 MB; every file gets its own CSV. Crop out anything that is not part of the table.

  2. 2

    Match the importing system

Comma and UTF-8 with BOM are preset. Change CSV delimiter to Semicolon for Excel in comma-decimal countries, or CSV encoding to plain UTF-8 for databases and code.

  3. 3

    Recognize text

Press Recognize text and download the .csv. Open it in a text editor once to confirm the delimiter before you import it.

Choose CSV when software will read the table. Choose XLSX when a person will.

Convert an image to CSV: what the file looks like

CSV is plain text: one line per row, fields separated by a delimiter. The common rules are written down in RFC 4180, published in 2005. A field that contains the delimiter, a quote mark or a line break is wrapped in double quotes, and a quote inside such a field is written twice. The converter applies those rules, so a description like Coffee, beans 1 kg stays one field instead of splitting in two.

Because CSV has no types, numbers are written plainly. With Store numbers as numbers on, 1,250.00 in the picture becomes 1250.00 in the file, without the thousands separator that would otherwise break the column. With it off, values are copied character for character, which is safer for codes, phone numbers and IDs.

CSV

Comma-separated values

CSV is a plain-text format for tables in which each line is a row and commas separate the columns. It has been used since the early days of computing and is described in RFC 4180, though many variants use semicolons or tabs and different text encodings. Nearly every spreadsheet, database and analytics tool can import and export it, which makes it the default format for moving data between systems. CSV stores only values, with no formulas, formatting, multiple sheets or data types.

A picture of a table gets converted to CSV when the data is going into an import screen, a database or a script, where formatting is useless and a plain, predictable row structure is required.

CSV has no sheets, formulas, formatting, merged cells or column widths. That is a feature when software reads it, because nothing hides inside the file, and a drawback when someone opens it to read. If people will work with the numbers, convert to XLSX instead; PNG to XLSX explains how typed number cells behave there.

Before importing, rename the header row to the column names the target system wants, and delete any total or subtotal rows the picture contained, since importers treat them as ordinary records.

Image to CSV questions

Why does my CSV open in Excel as one long column?

Excel splits a double-clicked CSV using the list separator from your system's regional settings. In Germany, France, Brazil and other countries that write decimals with a comma, that separator is a semicolon. Convert again with CSV delimiter set to Semicolon, or import the file through Data > From Text/CSV and choose the delimiter there.

What is the BOM in UTF-8 with BOM?

Three invisible bytes, EF BB BF, at the very start of the file. Excel for Windows reads them as a signal that the file is UTF-8 and then shows accents, the euro sign and non-Latin scripts correctly. Many databases and scripts do not need it, and a few treat it as part of the first column name, so pick plain UTF-8 for those.

When should I use the tab delimiter?

Pick Tab when values themselves contain commas and semicolons, such as addresses or product descriptions, and the receiving tool accepts TSV. Tabs almost never appear inside cell text, so no quoting is needed and the file is easy to paste into a spreadsheet.

Does the CSV keep merged cells, bold headers or several tables?

No. CSV holds only values, one table per file. Keep merged cells is off on this page so a merged label is repeated on every row it covers, which is what imports expect. If the picture has two tables, crop it into two images or convert to image to Excel, where each table gets its own sheet.

How do I keep leading zeros in ZIP codes and product codes?

The CSV itself keeps 00421 exactly as written when Store numbers as numbers is off. Excel strips the zeros only when it opens the file, so import through Data > From Text/CSV and set that column to Text.

What is Windows-1252 encoding for?

It is the older Western European code page used by some accounting and point-of-sale software that predates UTF-8. Choose it only when the importing program shows broken accents with UTF-8; it cannot store Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic or Asian characters.
