PNG to Word Converter

A PNG is a picture of text, not text. This page reads the words in your PNG with optical character recognition and writes them into a .docx file you can edit, search and reformat in Microsoft Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the PNG files

Drop screenshots, scanned pages or exported slides onto the upload area. Up to 20 images per batch, 95 MB each; every image becomes its own Word file.

  2. 2

    Confirm the language

English is selected. If the text is in another language, or mixes two, pick them under Document language and Also recognise before you start.

  3. 3

    Recognize and download

Press Recognize text. Open the .docx in Word, fix any word the OCR misread, and save it under a new name.

Answer

Can a PNG image really become an editable Word document?

Yes, through OCR. The converter finds every line of text in the PNG, turns the shapes back into letters and places them in a .docx with the original paragraph order. Screenshots convert almost word for word; blurry photos need a check afterwards.

How to convert PNG to Word without retyping

Most PNGs with text in them are screenshots: a shared slide, a page from a web app that blocks copying, a receipt from a banking app. PNG is lossless, so the letters keep hard edges, which is exactly what a recognition engine wants. That makes PNG to Word one of the most reliable OCR jobs, more reliable than a phone photo of a printed page.

Word itself will not do this for you. Insert a PNG into a document and Word treats it as a picture; there is no command that turns it into text. Google Docs can, if you upload the image to Drive and open it with Docs, but Google's own help page limits that to files of 2 MB or less and asks for text at least 10 pixels high. OneNote's Copy Text from Picture and the Text Actions button that Microsoft added to the Windows 11 Snipping Tool in 2023 copy plain text only, without layout.

Here the output is a real document: headings, paragraphs and columns in their places, pictures from the page copied next to the text when Keep pictures is on, and the result named after your PNG.

When the Word file comes out wrong, and the fix

  • The text is tiny or the screenshot was downscaled.

Retake the screenshot zoomed in, or upload the original rather than a thumbnail from a chat app. Letters around 20 pixels tall read far better than 8-pixel ones.

  • Accented or non-Latin characters turn into garbage.

Pick the real language under Document language. English recognition reads Hindi, Arabic or Chinese as random Latin letters; for mixed pages, add the second language under Also recognise.

  • Dark text sits on a transparent background.

Transparent pixels can be treated as black, so the text disappears. Flatten the image onto white first with PNG to JPG, then run the JPG here.

  • Words over a photo or gradient are missing.

Turn on Enhance contrast under Advanced settings. If it still fails, crop the image so only the text area remains.

Editing the DOCX after the conversion

Open the file and run Word's spelling check first: misread words usually show up as red underlines. Then check what a spell checker cannot catch, namely figures, dates, email addresses and product codes. Recognition replaces a character it is unsure of with the closest match, so a 0 can become an O and an rn can become an m.

Fonts are matched by style rather than by name, so a screenshot of a page set in a brand font comes back in a standard font of similar width. If you need a searchable file that still looks exactly like the image, choose Searchable PDF under Output instead; and if your source is a scanned PDF rather than a PNG, PDF to Word handles every page in one go.

PNG to Word questions

Is a PNG to DOCX conversion different from PNG to DOC?

The output here is always .docx, the format Word has used by default since Word 2007. Every current version of Word, Google Docs, Pages and LibreOffice opens it. If an old system insists on the 97–2003 .doc format, open the .docx in Word and use File → Save As → Word 97-2003 Document.

How accurate is text recognition on a PNG screenshot?

Clean screenshots are the best case for OCR: sharp edges, no paper texture, no tilt. Expect most words to come through correctly at normal screen sizes. Errors cluster in tiny text, decorative fonts, text over photos and characters that look alike, such as l, 1 and I, so read numbers and names twice.

Will my bullet lists, columns and tables stay in place?

With Text layout on Preserve layout, paragraphs, columns and simple tables are rebuilt in the Word file where they appeared in the image. If you only want the words to paste elsewhere, switch to Plain text flow.

Can I convert a PNG of handwriting into Word?

Yes. Set Text type to Handwriting. Neat block letters work well; joined cursive, faint pencil and crowded margins less so. For handwritten notes specifically, handwriting to text starts with that mode already selected.

Do I need Microsoft Word installed to use the result?

No. The .docx opens in Google Docs, Apple Pages, LibreOffice Writer and the free Word web app.

What happens to the PNG after I upload it?

It is processed on our servers to produce the Word file, then deleted together with the result 30 minutes later. The details are on the privacy policy page.
