Working American hours from Pakistan
Pakistan has one of the largest freelance workforces in the world, and many developers, designers and virtual assistants in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad work for clients on the US East Coast. A 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Eastern day is 7:00 PM to 3:00 AM in Pakistan in winter and 6:00 PM to 2:00 AM in summer. Most freelancers settle for partial overlap: their evening covers the American morning, and asynchronous updates handle the rest.
Pakistan tried daylight saving in 2008 and 2009 to save power, then dropped it, so Pakistan Standard Time stays UTC+5. The gap shrinks to 9 hours on the second Sunday of March, when the US moves forward, and returns to 10 on the first Sunday of November.
Cricket and family on Eastern time
When India played Pakistan at the 2024 T20 World Cup on Long Island, the match started at 10:30 AM in New York on June 9, which was 7:30 PM in Pakistan, a prime-time slot chosen with South Asian audiences in mind. Pakistani Americans in New York, from Brooklyn's Coney Island Avenue to Long Island, followed it in daylight while families back home watched in the evening.
Family calls follow a similar pattern: Saturday morning in New York is Saturday evening in Pakistan. 10:00 AM Eastern is 8:00 PM in Karachi in winter and 7:00 PM in summer. Late-evening calls from the US land in the small hours in Pakistan. For other cities, open the time zone converter.
