Why Moscow stopped changing its clocks
Russia used daylight saving for decades, then in 2011 stopped changing clocks and stayed on permanent summer time, putting Moscow at UTC+4. Dark winter mornings proved unpopular, and in October 2014 the country moved permanently to standard time; Moscow has been on UTC+3 ever since. During those three years Moscow was 9 hours ahead of New York in winter. Today all the movement comes from the US side, on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November.
Moscow time is only one of eleven Russian time zones, from Kaliningrad at UTC+2 to Kamchatka at UTC+12. Railway timetables in Russia were long printed in Moscow time across the whole country, a habit that confused travelers in Siberia; long-distance trains switched to local time in 2018.
Hockey nights and morning calls
Russian players are a big part of the NHL, and their fans back home watch at night. A 7:00 PM Eastern game is 3:00 AM in Moscow in the winter months and 2:00 AM in October and from mid-March to April. Playoff games in May start at 2:00 or 3:00 AM Moscow time, so many fans watch the replay over breakfast.
For calls, the Moscow afternoon matches the New York morning: 4:00 to 6:00 PM in Moscow is 8:00 to 10:00 AM in New York in winter and 9:00 to 11:00 AM in summer. Brooklyn's Brighton Beach, home to one of the largest Russian-speaking communities in the US, keeps the same habit for family calls. Check any other date with the time zone converter.
