DXF to PDF Converter

A DXF is the drawing; a PDF is the drawing anyone can open, check and print. Upload DXF files from any CAD or CAM program and get vector PDF pages, fitted to A4 for a quick look or at true scale for a cutting template.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the DXF files

Add up to 20 DXF files, ASCII or binary, 95 MB each.

  2. 2

    Choose scale and page

The page starts with Model space, Fit to page and an A4 Page size, which suits a quick review copy. For a template you will cut out or check with a ruler, choose Actual size (1:1) and a sheet large enough for the part.

  3. 3

    Convert to PDF

Press Convert to PDF and download. Lines stay vector, so the PDF zooms without blurring.

DXF files come from everywhere: AutoCAD and BricsCAD, SolidWorks and Fusion flat patterns, LightBurn and SheetCam cut files, surveying and GIS exports. Converting them to PDF is mostly a question of scale and units.

DXF to PDF scale: drawing units and $INSUNITS

A DXF coordinate is just a number. Whether 100 means 100 mm, 100 inches or 100 meters is recorded, if at all, in the $INSUNITS variable of the file's HEADER section. Printing at Actual size (1:1) depends on that value: a part drawn in millimeters with $INSUNITS set to 4 prints at its true size, while a file that says 0, unitless, gives no basis for real size. Many cut files exported by CAM and laser software are unitless or carry the wrong code.

If you are not sure, convert once with Actual size (1:1) and measure a feature you know on screen in the PDF viewer. When the number is 25.4 times off, the drawing is in inches and was read as millimeters, or the reverse; fix the units in the program that made the file.

Common $INSUNITS values in a DXF header
CodeUnitWhat Actual size (1:1) can do
0UnitlessNothing to go on; prefer Fit to page
1InchesPrints at true size in inches
2FeetSite plans; usually far bigger than any sheet
4MillimetersTypical for parts, sheet metal and laser files
5CentimetersSome furniture and interior drawings
6MetersArchitecture and survey; needs a layout to scale down

Model space or layouts in a DXF

A DXF saved from AutoCAD may contain layouts with title blocks and scaled viewports; those are the sheets to export, the same way DWG to PDF handles DWG files. DXFs from cutting and CAM software almost never have layouts, so Model space is the right choice and the default here.

DXF

Drawing Exchange Format

DXF is a CAD data exchange format published by Autodesk in 1982. It describes drawing geometry and layers in a documented text (or binary) structure, so many programs that cannot read DWG can read DXF. It is widely used for laser cutters, CNC routers, plasma cutters and vinyl cutters. DXF files are larger than DWG and may lose some advanced features during exchange.

PDF

Portable Document Format

PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

A DXF needs CAD or CAM software to view, so people turn it into a PDF to show a cut file, a part outline or a plan to a customer, a shop or a reviewer who will only look and print.

DXF to PDF questions

Why does the PDF show only a tiny speck in the middle of the page?

Fit to page scales the drawing's extents to the sheet, and something sits far away from the main geometry: a stray point, a lost block insert, a text object at the origin when the part is at 50,000 mm. Delete the stray entity in CAD and convert again.

Can a DXF with several paper-space layouts become a multi-page PDF?

Yes. Switch What to export to All layouts and each layout becomes a page. Release 12 DXF files only ever had one paper space; multiple named layouts arrived with AutoCAD 2000, so older DXFs give one page.

How do I print a DXF at exactly 1:1 for a template?

Convert with Actual size (1:1), then print the PDF at Actual size or 100% in your PDF viewer, never Fit or Shrink. Then measure a known dimension on the printout before you cut anything from it.

Why are some lines nearly invisible in the PDF?

CAD drawings often use yellow, cyan or light gray because they read well on a black screen. On white paper they fade. Choose Monochrome under Colors so every line prints black, the same idea as AutoCAD's monochrome plot style.

Can I edit the PDF afterwards?

The PDF holds vector paths, so Illustrator, Inkscape or PDF to SVG can pull the lines back out. Layer names and entity types are not kept, though, so edit the DXF when the geometry needs changing.
