DWG has been AutoCAD's working format since the first release, and its layout has changed with most major versions, which is why an old program refuses a new file. DXF shipped alongside it with AutoCAD 1.0 in December 1982 as the exchange format; Autodesk still publishes the DXF Reference for every release, so other software can write it reliably. DGN is the native format of Bentley's MicroStation, common in road and rail design. DWF is Autodesk's lightweight format for review, and PLT or HPGL files are print jobs written in the plotter language Hewlett-Packard introduced for its pen plotters.

On the design side, CDR belongs to CorelDRAW, released by Corel in 1989 and still widely used by sign makers, printers and engravers. AI, EPS and SVG cover Illustrator and web vector art. The converter treats all of these as geometry, so a CorelDRAW logo can become a DXF for a laser cutter and an AutoCAD plan can become an SVG for a website.

AutoCAD versions for DXF and DWG output

  1. 1992

    Release 12 · AC1009

Still the version laser cutters, CNC routers and plasma tables ask for.

  2. 1997

    Release 14 · AC1014

Machine software written in the late 1990s.

  3. 1999

    AutoCAD 2000 · AC1015

Very old programs that never moved past this format.

  4. 2003

    AutoCAD 2004 · AC1018

    Old CAM and estimating tools.

  5. 2006

    AutoCAD 2007 · AC1021

Legacy office software, and a safe pick when you do not know the recipient.

  6. 2009

    AutoCAD 2010 · AC1024

Older licenses and many free viewers.

  7. 2012

    AutoCAD 2013 · AC1027

Partners still working in AutoCAD 2013–2017.

  8. 2017

    AutoCAD 2018 · AC1032

The default under AutoCAD version; current releases still save this format, and a file opens in its release and every later one.

Layouts, scale, line colors and image tracing

What to export chooses between Model space, the whole drawing at real size, and All layouts, the paper-space sheets with title blocks and viewports. Scale chooses between Fit to page, which fills the sheet, and Actual size (1:1), where 1 mm in the drawing is 1 mm on paper. For PDF and EPS you can also force a Page size from A4 to A0, Letter or Tabloid, or keep Same as source, and set Orientation to Auto, Portrait or Landscape. Our DWG to PDF page presets all layouts at actual size for plotted sets.

Colors offers Original colors, Monochrome and Grayscale; monochrome turns yellow and cyan lines black so they survive white paper. Use line weights draws lines at their assigned thickness, and Background can be white, black like the AutoCAD drawing area, or transparent for PNG, SVG and PDF.

Tracing applies only when the input is a photo or scan and the output is DXF, DWG, SVG, CDR or EPS. Trace as Outlines follows the edges of filled shapes, which suits logos and cut paths; Centrelines draws one line down the middle of each stroke, which suits scanned sketches and pen plotters. Black/white threshold (1–99%, default 50) decides how dark a pixel must be to count as ink, and Smoothing (0–100) trades exact pixel edges for fewer, cleaner curves.

  1. "Saved by a newer version"

Convert again with an older AutoCAD version. If you do not know the recipient's release, AutoCAD 2007 or 2010 opens almost everywhere.

  2. Curves missing on the laser cutter

Its controller expects Release 12, which has no splines. Choose Release 12 so curves are written as arcs and polylines it understands.

  3. Specks all over a traced logo

Paper texture or JPG noise was traced. Lower Black/white threshold and raise Smoothing, or start from a clean PNG at a higher resolution.

  4. A part 25.4 times too large

Inches were read as millimeters, or the reverse. Check the units setting in the importing program; the converted geometry keeps the source units.

CAD converter questions

What is the difference between DWG and DXF?

DWG is AutoCAD's own binary format and the one AutoCAD saves by default. DXF describes the same entities in a format Autodesk documents publicly, so laser cutters, CNC software, Inkscape and most other CAD programs can read it. Convert to DXF when the drawing has to leave the AutoCAD world.

Which AutoCAD version should I save a DXF or DWG as?

The oldest one the recipient uses. AutoCAD 2018 is the default and opens in every release since 2018; pick 2013 or 2010 for a client on an older license. Many laser cutters and CNC controllers only read Release 12 DXF, which stores simple lines, arcs and polylines.

Can I edit a DWG file without AutoCAD?

You can view it here as a PDF, and you can convert it to DXF for free editors such as LibreCAD or QCAD, which read DXF fully but DWG only partly. For precise work, convert DWG to DXF at the 2013 or 2018 version so text and layers keep their structure.

Can a scanned floor plan be turned into an editable CAD drawing?

Yes, by tracing. Upload the JPG or PNG and convert to DXF or DWG; every dark stroke becomes a vector path you can select and move. It is not a redrawn plan: walls are outlines or single lines, text becomes shapes, and dimensions have to be checked against a known length and scaled in CAD.

Why does my DWG export only one page when the drawing has several sheets?

What to export is set to Model space, which is the default and gives the whole drawing on one page. Switch it to All layouts to get one page per paper-space sheet, each with its own title block and viewport scale.

What resolution should a DWG to PNG export use?

300 DPI, the default, is print quality for a sheet up to A3. For screens and email 150 DPI is plenty. Higher values grow fast: an A1 sheet at 600 DPI is roughly 14,000 pixels wide, which many image viewers struggle to open.

Do I need CorelDRAW installed to convert CDR files?

No. CorelDRAW CDR, CDT templates and CMX exchange files are read on the server and turned into PDF, SVG, PNG, JPG or EPS. The CDR to PDF page is set up for print-ready output.
