DWG to PNG Converter

Need a floor plan in a listing, a detail in a slide deck or a drawing in a chat message? Converting the DWG to PNG plots each layout sheet as a crisp image that any phone, browser or document editor can show.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the DWG files

Add up to 20 drawings, 95 MB each. Bind external references in AutoCAD first; anything stored in a separate file will not appear in the image.

  2. 2

    Review the plot settings

This page exports All layouts with Colors set to Monochrome, Use line weights on, a white Background and a Resolution of 200 DPI. Switch to Model space for drawings that have no sheets set up.

  3. 3

    Convert to PNG

Press Convert to PNG. Each layout becomes its own PNG; download them one by one or together as a ZIP.

Exporting a DWG to PNG is plotting to a bitmap: the same decisions as sending a sheet to a printer, line weights, plot style colors and paper size, decide what the image looks like.

Layouts, model space and pixel size

AutoCAD's DWG has been its native file since 1982, and few people outside the design team have software that opens it. Autodesk's free DWG TrueView is a large Windows download, which is a lot to ask of a client who just wants to see the plan. A PNG avoids the problem.

A layout has a paper size, so its pixel size is simple arithmetic: sheet width in inches times the Resolution. An A1 sheet at 200 DPI is about 6622 × 4677 px. Model space has no paper; the drawing extents are fitted into the image, so stray objects far from the plan shrink everything else. That is why All layouts is the preset.

Line weights and background in a DWG to PNG export

With Use line weights on, lines keep the widths assigned in the drawing. At 200 DPI one pixel is 0.127 mm, so a 0.13 mm hatch line is about one pixel and a 0.50 mm wall outline about four. Objects left at the AutoCAD default of 0.25 mm come out two pixels wide. Turn line weights off when a dense plan reads better with uniform thin lines.

AutoCAD draws model space on a dark background, which is why designers use pale colors there. A white Background matches paper and documents; Black reproduces the CAD screen; Transparent suits overlays. To keep the geometry editable instead, convert DWG to DXF.

DWG

AutoCAD Drawing

DWG is the native file format of Autodesk AutoCAD, used since 1982. It stores 2D and 3D design data, including geometry, layers, dimensions, blocks and metadata, and is the standard for architecture, engineering and construction drawings. The format is proprietary and changes between AutoCAD versions, so older software may not open newer files. Viewing requires AutoCAD, a free viewer such as DWG TrueView, or a compatible CAD program.

PNG

Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

PNG converter

DWG to PNG turns an AutoCAD sheet into a picture for places that only accept images, such as property listings, presentations, chat apps and web pages, where a PDF or a CAD file would not display.

Every line and hatch plots black, the same idea as monochrome.ctb. Best for plans viewed on white and for anything that may be printed.

DWG to PNG questions

Why does my DWG to PNG export show only part of the drawing?

A layout shows what its viewports frame, so geometry outside them is not plotted. Export Model space instead for everything in the drawing at once, or adjust the viewport in AutoCAD and upload again.

Which resolution should I choose for a DWG plan in PNG?

For a screen, slide or listing, 150 to 200 DPI on an A3 or Tabloid sheet is plenty. For a print at the sheet's own size, use 300 DPI. Large sheets at high resolutions produce images tens of thousands of pixels wide, which many viewers and upload forms reject.

Why are some lines invisible or very faint in the PNG?

Yellow, light cyan and color 7 lines were drawn for a dark CAD background. On white they fade or vanish in Original colors. Monochrome, the preset here, plots every line black, like AutoCAD's monochrome.ctb plot style.

Can I get a transparent PNG of an AutoCAD drawing?

Yes. Set Background to Transparent, and the lines sit on nothing, ready to drop over a site photo or a colored slide. Keep Monochrome or Original colors in mind: black lines on a dark slide will disappear.

Should I send a DWG as PNG or as PDF?

PNG when the drawing goes into something that only takes images: a website, a chat, a listing or a slide. PDF when someone may print it to scale or zoom into details, since DWG to PDF stays vector and keeps every sheet in one file.

How do I make the PNG small enough for an email or form?

Lower the Resolution first: halving it cuts the pixel count to a quarter. PNG compresses line drawings on white very well, so most sheets end up modest; reducing image size in KB covers further steps.
