Image to DWG Converter

Put a picture into AutoCAD as real geometry instead of a linked image. This page traces logos, stamps, sketches and sign artwork from any common image format into closed polylines and saves them as a DWG.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the images

Add up to 20 PNG, JPG, BMP, TIFF, GIF or WebP files, 95 MB each. Crop each one to just the artwork you need.

  2. 2

    Review the trace settings

Defaults are Outlines with Smoothing at 60 for clean curves on logos. Use Centrelines for pen sketches, and move Black/white threshold if parts go missing or specks appear.

  3. 3

    Convert to DWG

Press Convert to DWG. Files are saved in the AutoCAD 2013 format, which every release from 2013 onward opens.

Attach an image or convert it to DWG geometry

AutoCAD has always been able to show a picture: attach it as a raster reference and it appears in the drawing. But the DWG only stores a path to the file. Send the drawing without the image and the recipient sees an empty frame with a file name in it, and nothing in the picture can be snapped to, hatched or offset.

A traced DWG is the opposite trade. The shapes are entities inside the drawing, so they copy, plot and survive eTransmit packages without anything attached, and object snaps work on their vertices. You give up color and tone; tracing keeps only the shapes that cross the black/white threshold. For a logo, a stamp, a signature or a line sketch, that is exactly what you wanted.

Polylines

Closed shapes stored in the drawing; snap, hatch, scale

What the image-to-DWG file contains

Closed polylines
Every dark shape becomes a polyline loop; letters keep their inner loops.
A single layer
All traced shapes share one layer, ready to move onto your own layer standard.
Pixel-based size
There is no real-world scale in an image, so scale by reference to one known length.
No text or dimensions
Letters and numbers in the picture become shapes, not editable text.

This tool accepts common image formats, including JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, GIF, BMP and TIFF. The format is detected automatically from the file, so you do not need to know what kind of image you have.

DWG

AutoCAD Drawing

DWG is the native file format of Autodesk AutoCAD, used since 1982. It stores 2D and 3D design data, including geometry, layers, dimensions, blocks and metadata, and is the standard for architecture, engineering and construction drawings. The format is proprietary and changes between AutoCAD versions, so older software may not open newer files. Viewing requires AutoCAD, a free viewer such as DWG TrueView, or a compatible CAD program.

DWG converter

People convert an image to DWG to get artwork such as a logo, a stamp or a sketch into AutoCAD as geometry that plots, snaps and scales, instead of a linked picture that breaks when the file moves.

Which images convert well to DWG

High contrast and sharp edges beat everything else. A logo exported as a PNG, a stamp scanned on a flatbed, or a pen sketch photographed in even daylight all trace cleanly. Gradients, shadows and photographic detail do not. A PNG is the cleanest starting point, and PNG to DWG is tuned for exactly that. If the drawing is going to a laser cutter or CAM program rather than AutoCAD, image to DXF uses the same trace and saves the exchange format those programs prefer.

Image to DWG questions

How do I put a company logo into an AutoCAD title block?

Trace the logo here with Outlines, open the DWG, and copy the outlines into your title block drawing. Make them a block, fill them with a SOLID hatch so they print as solid shapes, and scale the block to fit the logo box. If the logo exists as SVG, SVG to DWG skips tracing and gives exact curves.

Can I check the DWG without owning AutoCAD?

Yes. Autodesk's free DWG TrueView opens and plots DWG files on Windows, and Autodesk Viewer shows them in a browser. Either is enough to confirm the trace looks right before you send it to someone who works in AutoCAD.

Why is the DWG saved as AutoCAD 2013 and not 2018?

The 2013 format opens in AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT from 2013 onward, so it also reaches offices still running 2015 or 2017. A traced image uses nothing that needed the 2018 format. Choose 2018 or an older version under AutoCAD version whenever you know the recipient's release.

Why are the curves made of many short straight segments?

Tracing writes polylines, and a curve in a polyline is approximated by short segments. At normal zoom they look smooth. PEDIT's Fit or Spline option rounds them further, at the cost of moving vertices slightly.

Can a map or aerial photo be traced into a useful DWG?

Rarely. Maps and photos have many colors and soft edges, so tracing produces blobs. Attach the image as a reference, scale it to a known distance, and draw the roads or boundaries you need on top.
