GST to EST
Dubai is 9 hours ahead of New York in winter and 8 hours ahead while the US is on daylight time. 9:00 AM in Dubai is midnight in New York in January and 1:00 AM in July, and 5:00 PM in Dubai is 8:00 or 9:00 AM on the East Coast.
A working week that finally lines up
In January 2022 the UAE moved its official weekend from Friday–Saturday to Saturday–Sunday, with a shorter Friday for government staff. Before that, Dubai and New York shared only four working days, Monday to Thursday; now they share five. Dubai's financial markets moved to a Monday-to-Friday week at the same time, which made it easier for American investors to trade there.
The UAE stays on Gulf Standard Time, UTC+4, all year with no daylight saving. New York switches on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, so the gap alternates between 9 and 8 hours. The abbreviation GST is also used for South Georgia Time and is the everyday name of a sales tax in several countries; "Dubai time" or "UTC+4" is clearer in writing.

The afternoon-to-morning overlap
Dubai's late afternoon meets New York's morning. 4:00 to 6:00 PM in Dubai is 7:00 to 9:00 AM in New York in winter and 8:00 to 10:00 AM in summer, the window when regional headquarters in Dubai check in with American head offices. During Ramadan, when many UAE offices shorten their hours, that window narrows, so plan important calls for the Dubai morning or after iftar.
Emirates flies nonstop between Dubai and New York in about 14 hours westbound. Leave Dubai at 8:30 AM and you land around 1:30 PM in New York in winter, or 2:30 PM in summer, on the same day. For the Dubai–India pair, see Dubai to India time.
