JPG to Word Converter

Photograph a printed page, upload the JPG, and get a Word document where every line is real text you can edit. Text recognition reads the photo, rebuilds the paragraphs and saves a DOCX that opens in Word, Google Docs or Pages.

Taking a JPG that converts well

iPhone

  1. 01Hold the phone parallel to the page and tap the text to focus.
  2. 02Or use Scan Documents in the Notes app, which crops and flattens the page; share the scan as a PDF and upload that.
  3. 03Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible saves JPG instead of HEIC; both upload here.

Android

  1. 01Shoot in daylight, without flash glare on glossy paper.
  2. 02The Scan button in Google Drive crops and straightens pages automatically.
  3. 03Fill the frame with the page so the margins are just visible.

Desktop scanner

  1. 01Scan at 300 DPI in grayscale or color.
  2. 02Save as JPG at high quality, or as PDF.
  3. 03Press the page flat so lines near a book's spine are not curved.

How a JPG becomes an editable Word file

A JPG stores the colors of pixels and nothing else; to a computer the words on it are just shapes. Optical character recognition finds the lines of text, splits them into characters and matches them against what the chosen language looks like. The result is a stream of text plus the position of each line, and the converter uses those positions to rebuild paragraphs, columns and tables in the DOCX.

Text layout decides how much of the page structure survives. Preserve layout keeps columns and tables where they were, which suits forms and invoices. Plain text flow writes one continuous run of paragraphs that is easier to restyle. Straighten pages and Auto rotate are on by default and fix a photo taken at an angle before recognition, while Enhance contrast helps with dim pictures taken indoors.

Is the page already a scanned PDF? PDF to Word handles scanned and digital PDFs, and PNG to Word is the version for screenshots.

JPG

JPEG image

JPEG (or JPG) is the most widely used photo format, standardised by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992. It uses lossy compression that discards fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which keeps photos small enough for the web, email and phone storage. It handles smooth gradients and natural scenes well, but sharp text, line art and flat colours pick up visible blocky or fuzzy artefacts. JPEG has no transparency and no animation, and every re-save loses a little more quality. Every browser, phone, camera and image editor can open it.

DOCX

Microsoft Word document

DOCX is Microsoft Word's default document format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard (ECMA-376, ISO/IEC 29500). It is a ZIP package of XML files holding text, styles, images, tables, comments and tracked changes. It is the most common format for editable documents in offices, schools and job applications. Layout can shift slightly between Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages, especially with complex formatting. Most word processors open DOCX files.

People convert a JPG to Word when the only copy of a page is a photo: a handout, a printed letter or a book page they need to quote, edit or reformat without retyping it.

Resolution that keeps recognition accurate

300 DPIthe minimum resolution the documentation of the open-source Tesseract OCR engine recommends

An A4 page at 300 DPI is about 8.7 megapixels, so a 12-megapixel phone photo gets there only when the page fills the frame.

JPG to Word questions

Can I edit the text after converting JPG to Word?

Yes, that is the point of the conversion. Every recognized word is regular text in the DOCX, so you can type, delete, change fonts and run spell check. Proofread first: in a less-than-sharp photo OCR may confuse similar shapes such as 0 and O or 1 and l.

Is JPG to DOC the same as JPG to DOCX?

Nearly. DOCX has been Word's default format since Office 2007 and opens in every current word processor; the older binary DOC is only needed for Word 97–2003. This page writes DOCX, which Word, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs and Apple Pages all open.

Does it work with handwritten pages?

Neat handwriting can be read with Text type set to Handwriting, but accuracy is lower than for print and joined-up cursive often needs heavy correction. For notebooks and forms filled in by hand, handwriting to text is set up for that case.

Which languages can a JPG be read in?

34, including English, Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Arabic, Russian, Japanese, Korean and both Simplified and Traditional Chinese. Choose the language under Document language before you start; with the wrong language, accented and non-Latin characters come out as guesses.

Why do tables come out as plain lines?

Tables are detected from the gaps and ruling lines in the photo. If the photo is tilted or the lines are faint, columns can merge into running text. Keep Text layout on Preserve layout, retake the photo square-on, and try Enhance contrast for faded copies.

Do I need to install an app?

No. The converter runs in a mobile or desktop browser without an account, and photos and results are deleted 30 minutes after processing.
