Answer

How do I convert an image to a Word document?

Upload the image here, keep Output on Word (.docx) and press Recognize text. The words in the picture are read with OCR and saved as editable paragraphs in a .docx file.

Which images convert to a document cleanly

Screenshots are the easiest source. The text was drawn by a computer, so it is sharp and perfectly level, and recognition is close to exact unless the font is tiny. A screenshot of a slide, a PDF page that will not let you copy, or a chat message converts with few corrections.

Scans come next. A flatbed scan at 300 DPI is the case OCR engines are tuned for. Phone photos are the hardest because of perspective, uneven light and blur; Straighten pages and Enhance contrast recover a lot, but a sharp, square-on photo beats any correction. Old documents on yellowed paper read better in grayscale than in color.

Languages, mixed pages and handwriting limits

Reads well

  • Printed text in any of the 34 languages, from Latin scripts to Devanagari, Arabic, Thai and Chinese
  • Pages that mix two languages, with Also recognise set to the second one
  • Screenshots and clean scans at 300 DPI
  • Neat block capitals written by hand

Needs proofreading

  • Joined-up cursive and hurried notes
  • Text over photos, patterned backgrounds or colored paper
  • Small print photographed from a distance
  • Math formulas, which come out as plain characters rather than Word equations

Language matters more than people expect. Recognition models are trained per script and per language, so English settings misread accented letters in French or Polish and cannot read Hindi or Arabic at all. Right-to-left scripts such as Arabic, Hebrew, Persian and Urdu are on the list, as are Japanese, Korean and both forms of Chinese. A second language helps mixed pages but slightly lowers accuracy on single-language ones, so leave Also recognise on None when you do not need it.

If you only want the words, not a Word file, image to text returns plain text to copy. For photos of printed pages specifically, JPG to Word explains how to take a picture that converts well.

Image to Word questions

Can Word turn a picture into text by itself?

Word for desktop does not read text from pictures pasted into a document. OneNote for Windows can, with its Copy Text from Picture command, and you then paste the result into Word. Converting the image here produces the DOCX directly, with paragraphs and tables already in place.

Will the formatting of my screenshot be kept?

With Text layout on Preserve layout, headings, columns and tables stay roughly where they were. Fonts are replaced with standard ones, so expect to restyle a few headings. Choose Plain text flow if you would rather start from clean paragraphs.

How accurate is image to Word conversion?

On clean screenshots and 300 DPI scans of printed text it is close to character-perfect. Accuracy drops with blur, low contrast, tilted photos, decorative fonts and handwriting. Proofread numbers, names and email addresses, which spell check will not catch.

Can I convert an image with two languages on it?

Yes. Set Document language to the main language and Also recognise to the second, for example Hindi with English words, or Spanish with English product names.

Can I get a searchable PDF instead of a Word document?

Switch Output to Searchable PDF. The page keeps its original look and gains a hidden text layer you can search and copy; OCR PDF explains when that is the better choice.

How many images can I convert at once?

Up to 20 images per batch, each up to 95 MB, without an account. Uploaded images and the Word files are deleted automatically 30 minutes after processing.
