For pages that mix two languages, e.g. Hindi with English words. Leave on none otherwise; an extra language slightly lowers accuracy.
Preserve keeps columns, paragraphs and tables where they were. Plain outputs one continuous block of text, easier to paste into forms.

How to use this tool
- 1
Photograph or scan the pages
Upload up to 20 images or a scanned PDF of a notebook, each up to 95 MB. One page per picture, in daylight, gives the cleanest result.
- 2
Check the language
Text type is on Handwriting and Output on Plain text (.txt). Choose Document language if the notes are not in English, or switch Output to Word (.docx) to edit with formatting.
- 3
Recognize text and correct
Press Recognize text, open the result next to the original page and fix the words the reader got wrong. Names and numbers deserve a second look.
Print vs cursive: why handwriting is harder to read than type
Printed type repeats itself: every lowercase a in a document is the same shape. Handwriting never does. Your a changes with the letter before it, slants differently at the end of a line and joins its neighbors with strokes that belong to no letter. Recognition cannot cut a cursive word into characters and read them one by one, so it guesses the whole word, using the language's vocabulary to choose between readings. That is why the right Document language matters even more here than for print.
Reading a picture is also different from watching someone write. An iPad with Apple Pencil, through the Scribble feature added in iPadOS 14 in 2020, sees the order and direction of every stroke. A photo only has the finished ink, so a sentence a tablet converts perfectly can come back with errors from a photo, and no setting can recover the missing stroke information.
Handwriting to text accuracy by writing style
| Writing | How it is read | Plan for |
|---|---|---|
| BLOCK CAPITALS | Letters are separate and uniform | A quick proofread |
| Neat print, spaced words | Mostly letter by letter | A few corrections per page |
| Joined-up everyday writing | Whole words guessed from shape and vocabulary | Corrections in many lines |
| Fast notes, abbreviations | Shorthand is not in any dictionary | Rewriting parts by hand |
| Numbers in tables | Digits have no word context to help | Checking every figure |
| Faint pencil | Low contrast; Enhance contrast helps | Retaking the photo in better light |
MythA higher-resolution photo fixes messy handwriting.
FactResolution helps until the strokes are sharp. After that, the limit is the writing itself; a hand a stranger cannot read stays hard to read.
MythThe converter gets used to your handwriting over time.
FactEach upload is read fresh with the same model. Consistent spacing and capitals help more than repeated uploads.
MythHandwriting mode is the better choice for every page.
FactFor typed text it is less exact than Printed. Use it only when most of the page was written by hand.
Google Lens, Live Text or a converter for handwritten notes
For one sticky note, your phone is quicker. Google Lens, launched in 2017, copies text from the camera view, and Apple's Live Text, introduced with iOS 15 in 2021, lets you select words in any photo on an iPhone with an A12 chip or newer. Both copy plain text from one picture to the clipboard.
A converter makes sense when you have many pages, need a file rather than a clipboard, or work on a computer. Here 20 pictures or a scanned PDF are read in one go, in any of 34 languages, and saved as TXT, Word, Markdown or a searchable PDF. For typed pages in the same notebook, photo to Word keeps the layout; for a stack of scanned forms, OCR PDF adds a text layer and keeps the scan as it is.
Handwriting to text questions
How accurate is handwriting to text conversion?
It depends on the writer far more than on the software. Neat block capitals and separated print usually come back with only a few slips per page, while fast joined-up writing can need a correction in most lines. Treat the result as a first draft that saves typing, not as a finished transcript.
Can it read a doctor's note or an old letter in cursive?
Expect partial results. A hand other people struggle to read is also hard for software, and 19th-century copperplate uses letter forms modern writing rarely does. The output is still a useful start for a transcription you finish by eye.
How should I write so my notes convert better?
Leave clear gaps between words, write on the line rather than across it and use a dark pen instead of pencil. Lined paper helps more than squared paper, whose grid can be mistaken for strokes. Block capitals are the most reliable of all, which is why forms ask for them.
Can I convert a whole notebook at once?
Yes. Upload up to 20 photos in one batch, or scan the notebook to a single PDF and upload that; the Pages option under Advanced settings reads every page, only the first or a range such as 3-12.
Does handwriting recognition work for languages other than English?
Pick the language under Document language and the handwriting mode reads with that language's alphabet and vocabulary. Results are best for Latin-script languages; handwritten Chinese, Arabic or Devanagari are harder and come back with more gaps.
