PDF to GIF Converter

GIF is still the one image type that almost every forum, wiki and older content system accepts. This page renders each PDF page as a GIF and starts in Grayscale, because 256 shades of gray fit GIF's palette exactly and keep text free of speckles.

GIF works for PDF pages that are mostly text and line art. Keep them in Grayscale and they fit the 256-color palette with nothing lost.

Convert PDF to GIF without ruining the text

CompuServe released GIF in 1987, and the 1989 revision, GIF89a, added transparency and animation. Every GIF image is limited to a palette of at most 256 colors. For a typical document that limit is not a problem if you choose the color mode carefully: an 8-bit grayscale page uses exactly 256 levels of gray, so it maps onto GIF's palette with no loss at all.

Trouble starts with color pages. Anti-aliased colored text, photos and gradient fills contain tens of thousands of distinct colors. Squeezed into 256, they are either banded into flat steps or dithered into patterns of dots. Dithering around letters is what makes small colored type look fuzzy and speckled. Black & white mode is the other clean option: every pixel is pure black or white, which suits signed forms, sheet music and technical drawings, and gives very small files.

GIF compresses with LZW, which is lossless and works best on runs of identical pixels. White margins and solid backgrounds compress well; photographs and noise from scanned paper compress badly.

GIF vs PNG for a PDF page

PDF

Portable Document Format

PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

GIF

Graphics Interchange Format

GIF was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and is still the most widely supported format for short, looping animations. It is lossless but limited to a palette of 256 colours per frame, so photos and gradients show banding and dithering. It supports only on/off (1-bit) transparency, which leaves jagged edges on curved shapes. Animated GIFs are often far larger than the same clip as MP4 or WebP. Every browser, chat app and social platform plays GIFs.

PDF pages become GIFs when a forum, wiki, help desk or older site builder will only take GIF uploads, or when the pages are going to be assembled into a simple animated slideshow.

PDF to GIF questions

Can I make an animated GIF that flips through the PDF pages?

This converter writes one still GIF per page, numbered in order, and does not combine them into an animation. Load the numbered frames into any GIF animation tool to set a delay between pages; keeping the default 100 DPI keeps the final animation light.

Why does my GIF page look grainy or dotted?

GIF can show only 256 colors per image. A colored page with photos, gradients or shaded boxes has far more, so the encoder mixes dots of nearby colors to fake the missing ones, which is called dithering. Grayscale avoids it for most documents, and PDF to PNG avoids it completely.

Is GIF a good choice for a PDF full of photos?

No. Photos need thousands of colors and come out blotchy with a 256-color palette, and the files are often larger than a JPG of the same page. Use PDF to JPG for photo pages and keep GIF for text, line art and simple charts.

What resolution works for a PDF page as GIF?

100 DPI, the default here, turns an A4 page into 827 × 1169 px, which reads well on screen. Go to 150 DPI if the page has small print. GIF compression works best on flat areas, so higher DPI grows the file faster than it would with PNG.

Can a GIF page have a transparent background?

The GIF format allows one fully transparent color, but this converter keeps the page's own white background. When you need a page to float over another color, export transparent PNG or WebP instead.
