PDF to EPS Converter
Get Encapsulated PostScript out of a PDF when a LaTeX build, a journal's figure rules or an older layout and print system will not take PDF. Every page you choose becomes a separate EPS file.

Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Page numbers or ranges separated by commas, e.g. 1-3, 5.
85 keeps text crisp. Lower it only if the images are too large to upload.
Black & white produces pure black and white pixels, which suits scanned text and keeps files very small.
Each page becomes its own image. A ZIP keeps them together and numbered in page order.

What changes when a PDF page becomes EPS
PDF and EPS share a family tree. Both describe pages with Adobe's PostScript imaging model of paths, fills and fonts, but PDF is a complete document with many pages, links, forms and transparency, while EPS is a single PostScript drawing meant to be dropped into something else. The header of an EPS contains a %%BoundingBox line that tells the host program the exact rectangle the artwork occupies, which is why a placed EPS figure is cropped to its content instead of a full letter-size page.
Fonts are the next thing to know about. An EPS is only portable if the text displays without the fonts installed, so the fonts embedded in the PDF are carried into the EPS or the letters are drawn as outlines. Many EPS files also include a low-resolution TIFF preview so that Windows layout programs can show a thumbnail; programs that cannot render PostScript show that preview or a gray box, and the real vector data is used only when printing or exporting.

Portable Document Format
PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

Encapsulated PostScript
EPS is a PostScript-based graphics file from Adobe, long used to exchange vector artwork with printers and publishers. It can contain vectors, text and embedded raster images along with a low-resolution preview. EPS does not support transparency, and modern software has largely replaced it with PDF and SVG. Opening it typically requires Illustrator, Inkscape, Affinity Designer or a Ghostscript-based tool, and browsers cannot display it.

A PDF is turned into EPS when a LaTeX template, a journal's figure guidelines or a PostScript-based print workflow requires one placed graphic per file; EPS to PDF goes the other way, making old artwork viewable and printable on current systems.

Who still asks for PDF to EPS conversion
The steady demand comes from academic publishing. Papers compiled with plain latex and dvips can include only EPS graphics, and some journal and conference templates still follow that route. Researchers typically export a chart from R, MATLAB, Python or Excel as PDF, then need each figure as its own EPS with a tight box around the plot. Prepress and sign shops running older RIPs, and layout programs such as QuarkXPress or older InDesign templates linked to EPS placeholders, account for most of the rest.
For new work, PDF has replaced EPS almost everywhere, and Microsoft Office no longer accepts it, so convert only the pages a specific recipient asks for. Keep Resolution at 300 DPI for print, since it controls any part of the page that has to be rasterized. If the target is a website or a modern editor, PDF to SVG keeps the same vectors in a format browsers display.
PDF to EPS questions
Does PDF to EPS keep text and lines as vectors?
Yes, vector paths and text are written as PostScript drawing commands, so the EPS stays sharp at any print size. Photos embedded in the PDF stay raster images inside the EPS, at the resolution they already had.
Why does every page of my PDF become a separate EPS?
The EPS specification allows exactly one page per file, because an EPS is meant to be placed inside another document like a picture. A PDF with 10 pages therefore produces 10 files, named with their page numbers.
How do I put the converted EPS into a LaTeX paper?
Load the graphicx package and use \includegraphics{figure-1.eps}. The latex plus dvips route reads EPS natively. With pdflatex, TeX Live converts EPS on the fly through epstopdf, so keeping the original PDF figure is simpler if your template allows it.
Can I place an EPS made from a PDF in Microsoft Office files?
Microsoft turned off EPS import in Office for Windows with a security update in April 2017, after attackers abused the PostScript filter. For Office documents, use the PDF itself or a high-resolution PNG from PDF to PNG.
Why won't my Mac show a preview of the EPS?
Preview stopped opening PostScript and EPS files in macOS Ventura (13), released in 2022. Open the file in Illustrator, Affinity Designer, Inkscape or a Ghostscript-based viewer, or convert it back with EPS to PDF for a quick look.
What happens to transparent objects from the PDF?
PostScript has no transparency, so soft shadows, semi-transparent fills and blend modes are flattened into opaque artwork. Areas that cannot be expressed as vectors are rendered as images at the Resolution you set, 300 DPI by default.
