MP4 to OGG Converter

OGG is the open audio format that game engines, Minecraft resource packs and Linux software reach for first. This page extracts the sound of an MP4 and saves it as Ogg Vorbis, with Opus one click away for voice messages.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload your MP4 videos

Choose up to 20 MP4 files of up to 95 MB each. Other video files such as MOV or MKV are accepted as well.

  2. 2

    Confirm OGG and the bitrate

Convert to is set to OGG at 160 kbps. Switch to Opus for a voice message, or lower Bitrate to 96 kbps for background sounds in a game.

  3. 3

    Extract to OGG

Press Extract to OGG. Each video becomes an .ogg file with the same name, ready to drop into your project folder.

Upload the MP4, leave Convert to on OGG, press Extract to OGG: the sound becomes a 160 kbps Ogg Vorbis file and the video is dropped.

OGG, Vorbis and Opus: what the .ogg file contains

Ogg is a container developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation, and Vorbis is the audio codec that made it famous; Vorbis 1.0 was released in 2002 as a patent-free answer to MP3. When people say "an OGG file" they almost always mean Ogg Vorbis, and that is what the OGG choice on this page produces.

Opus, standardized by the IETF as RFC 6716 in 2012, is the newer codec from the same circle. It usually lives in the same Ogg container but with an .opus extension, and it beats Vorbis on speech and at low bitrates. That is why chat apps use it for voice notes, while game tools and resource packs still ask for Vorbis by name.

Converting from an MP4 means decoding its AAC track and encoding again, so pick the codec for where the file goes, not for the best spec sheet. The comparison below sums it up.

Pick Opus in Convert to.

  • Clear speech at 32–64 kbps
  • Format of Discord and Telegram voice messages
  • Always decoded at 48 kHz
Best for: Voice messages, podcasts, VoIP clips

MP4

MPEG-4 video

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a multimedia container standardised by ISO/MPEG and based on Apple's QuickTime format. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, and can also carry subtitles, chapters and metadata. It is the most compatible video format in the world, playing on phones, browsers, TVs, game consoles and social platforms. The video inside is almost always lossy, so repeated re-encoding gradually reduces quality.

OGG

Ogg Vorbis audio

OGG files use the Ogg container from the Xiph.Org Foundation, most often with the lossy Vorbis codec and sometimes Opus or FLAC. Vorbis is open and royalty-free and sounds comparable to or better than MP3 at similar bitrates. It is widely used for game audio, open-source software and some streaming services. Older iPhones, some car stereos and many editors do not support OGG.

People convert MP4 to OGG to get a video's soundtrack into a game engine, a Minecraft resource pack or open-source software that expects royalty-free Ogg Vorbis rather than AAC or MP3.

MP4 to OGG questions

Is OGG the same as OGV?

They share the Ogg container but not the content. An .ogv file is video, usually Theora picture with Vorbis sound, while .ogg normally holds audio only. This page makes audio; to keep the picture, use the video converter.

Should I pick OGG or Opus for a Discord or Telegram voice message?

Opus. Both apps record voice messages as Opus inside an Ogg container, and Opus is designed for speech at low bitrates. Choose Opus in Convert to and 64 kbps mono; plain OGG here means Vorbis, which those apps treat as an ordinary audio attachment.

Will an OGG file play on an iPhone?

Not reliably. Apple added Ogg support late and only partly, so older iPhones and some apps still reject it. If the audio is meant for Apple devices, MP4 to M4A keeps the AAC family that iOS handles everywhere.

Which OGG bitrate do I need for game music?

Around 160 kbps sounds clean for music, and Spotify long used Ogg Vorbis at 96, 160 and 320 kbps for its quality tiers. Short sound effects can go down to 96 kbps; a looping ambience track is usually fine at 128 kbps.

Does converting MP4 to OGG lose quality?

Slightly. The AAC sound in the MP4 is decoded and re-encoded as Vorbis, a second lossy step. At 160 kbps or above the difference is hard to hear; avoid converting the result again.

Can Unity use the OGG files from this page?

Yes. Unity imports .ogg along with WAV, MP3 and AIFF and then recompresses audio to its own setting on build, so a 160 kbps Vorbis file is a good source for it.
