MP4 to MP3 Converter

Keep the sound, drop the picture. This converter extracts the audio track from an MP4 video and saves it as an MP3, the audio format every phone, browser, car stereo and media player can play, at the bitrate you choose.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Add your MP4 videos

Choose up to 20 videos from your computer or phone, each up to 95 MB. MOV, MKV, WebM and other video files are accepted too.

  2. 2

    Pick a bitrate

Bitrate is set to 192 kbps, which suits music. Choose 128 kbps for talks and lectures, or 320 kbps if the video has high-quality sound you want to keep.

  3. 3

    Extract to MP3

Press Extract to MP3 and download the audio files, named after the videos they came from.

Answer

How do I convert MP4 to MP3 without installing anything?

Upload the MP4 on this page, leave the bitrate at 192 kbps or pick another, and press Extract to MP3. The audio is re-encoded as MP3 and the video track is discarded, so the file is a fraction of the size.

What happens when you change MP4 to MP3

An MP4 is a container that holds at least two streams: a video track, usually H.264 or H.265, and an audio track, almost always AAC. Converting to MP3 throws away the video stream, decodes the AAC sound and encodes it again as MP3. Because the picture usually accounts for most of the file, the result is far smaller: a 10-minute 720p clip of around 90 MB becomes an MP3 of roughly 14 MB at 192 kbps.

Both AAC and MP3 are lossy, so this is a second compression on top of the first. At 192 kbps or more you will not hear the difference on ordinary headphones; at 96 kbps and below, cymbals and applause start to sound swishy. The extraction cannot add quality that the video's audio did not have, which is why a muffled screen recording stays muffled.

MP3 itself is from 1993, developed largely at Fraunhofer IIS, and its last patents expired in 2017, which is part of why every device and operating system plays it with no extra software. If the MP3 is for a podcast or voice notes, Channels set to Mono halves the data for the same quality, and Normalise volume brings quiet recordings up to a standard level. More tips are in our MP4 to MP3 guide.

Choosing an MP3 bitrate: 64 to 320 kbps

  1. 64 kbps

Voice memos and audiobooks in mono; about 0.48 MB per minute.

  2. 128 kbps

Lectures, podcasts, meetings; about 0.96 MB per minute.

  3. 192 kbps

Default here. Music from video sounds the same as the source.

  4. 320 kbps

Highest MP3 bitrate; 2.4 MB per minute, worth it only for clean sources.

MP4

MPEG-4 video

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a multimedia container standardised by ISO/MPEG and based on Apple's QuickTime format. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, and can also carry subtitles, chapters and metadata. It is the most compatible video format in the world, playing on phones, browsers, TVs, game consoles and social platforms. The video inside is almost always lossy, so repeated re-encoding gradually reduces quality.

MP3 audio

MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III) is a lossy audio format developed largely at the Fraunhofer Institute and standardised by MPEG in 1993. It removes sounds the ear is unlikely to notice, shrinking music to about a tenth of CD size at 128–320 kbps. All patents have expired, and every phone, car stereo, browser and media player supports it. Quality loss is audible at low bitrates and accumulates with re-encoding.

People convert MP4 to MP3 to keep only what they listen to, a song, a lecture or a podcast episode recorded as video, in a small file that plays offline, in the car or on any music player.

MP4 to MP3 FAQ

Is this MP4 to MP3 converter really free?

Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of conversions; each batch takes up to 20 videos of up to 95 MB. Uploaded videos and the MP3s are deleted from our servers 30 minutes after processing.

Which bitrate should I choose for an MP3 from a video?

Match it to the content. 128 kbps is plenty for speech, 192 kbps for most music, and 320 kbps only when the source audio is itself high quality. A bitrate above the original video's audio bitrate makes a bigger file without improving the sound.

How big will the MP3 be?

Size depends only on bitrate and length, not on the video's resolution. One minute takes about 0.96 MB at 128 kbps, 1.44 MB at 192 kbps and 2.4 MB at 320 kbps, so a 45-minute lecture at 128 kbps is roughly 43 MB.

Can I convert only part of the video?

Yes. Under Advanced settings, fill in Start at and End at with seconds or minutes:seconds, for example 1:15 and 4:30. Only that stretch is extracted, which is handy for a single song from a concert clip.

How do I turn a Twitter or X video into an MP3?

Save the video file to your device first, for example from the X data archive for your own posts, then upload the MP4 here. This page converts files you upload; it does not fetch videos from links.

Is MP4 to M4A better than MP3?

M4A usually holds the same AAC audio the MP4 already contains, so MP4 to M4A can avoid a second lossy encode and sounds marginally cleaner. MP3 wins on compatibility with older players, car stereos and some editing apps.
