Grayscale PDF Converter
A grayscale PDF keeps every tone of the original as a shade of gray, so photos, charts and highlighted rows stay readable while the color disappears. It is the safe choice for documents you will archive, hand to a print shop or print on different machines over the years.

Images only keeps colored text and links (useful for saving printer ink on photos); text and graphics only leaves photos in color.
Page numbers or ranges separated by commas, e.g. 1-4, 9.
0 keeps the original tones. Positive values darken text and lighten backgrounds of faded scans.
Images above this DPI are downsampled. 150 is fine for reading and office printing.

Choose a grayscale PDF when tones carry information, as in photos, shaded tables and charts, and choose pure black and white only when the page is text.
What a grayscale PDF is
- Grayscale PDFmonochrome PDF · greyscale PDF · B&W PDF (loosely)
- A PDF whose text, drawings and images use only gray values, typically 256 levels from black to white for images, so the page has lightness but no hue. Inside a well-made file, gray is stored in a gray color space instead of RGB or CMYK.
People often say black and white when they mean grayscale, but the two are different results. A grayscale page has smooth shading; a PDF to black and white conversion leaves only two tones. If your document has a photograph, a chart with shaded areas or a signature in blue ballpoint, gray keeps all of it legible.
The main reasons to convert are consistency and storage. A color document printed on five different office machines comes out in five slightly different colors, and on a monochrome printer the driver decides how each color becomes gray. Converting once fixes those grays in the file, so every print and every screen shows the same thing. Scanned color pages also get smaller, since one gray channel replaces three color channels.

Grayscale PDF printing: ICC profiles and dot gain
On a screen, a 50% gray is simply half brightness. On paper, ink spreads a little as it soaks in, so halftone dots print larger than planned and midtones come out darker. Printers call this dot gain, and it is stronger on uncoated paper and newsprint than on glossy stock. Adobe Photoshop's long-standing default gray working space for North American prepress is named after it: Dot Gain 20%.
A PDF can store gray either as plain device gray, which each printer interprets on its own terms, or tied to an ICC gray profile that describes the intended output. This converter produces neutral grays without a print-specific profile and has no dot gain setting. For office printers, archives and screens that is what you want; for offset printing, let the print shop's prepress software apply their profile. If the result looks too dark on uncoated paper, a negative Contrast value opens up the shadows a little.
Before you make a grayscale PDF
Worth checking first
- Charts that rely on color alone may need labels
- Keep the color original; gray cannot be undone
- Use Pages to leave a color cover or map alone
- Turn on Reduce image resolution for big scans
- Red stamps turn mid-gray, blue ink dark gray
- Links and bookmarks keep working
Grayscale PDF questions
Does a grayscale PDF keep text as text?
Yes. Text and vector graphics only have their color values changed, so you can still select, search and copy the text. Scanned pages stay images, just in gray.
Why do two different colors look the same gray in my PDF?
Gray only records lightness. A medium red and a medium green can have almost the same lightness, so in a chart they turn into nearly identical bars. Label the series directly or use patterns if the chart has to work in gray.
Is a grayscale PDF a good choice for long-term archiving?
For scanned paper records it is a common compromise: smaller than color, yet it keeps pencil notes, stamps and faded print that a pure black and white scan would lose. For a formal archive, also convert the result with PDF to PDF/A, the ISO standard for long-term preservation.
Will a print shop accept a grayscale PDF made here?
For office printing and copy shops, yes. Commercial printers that work to a specific gray profile may still run their own preflight and adjust midtones for their paper, which is normal and does not mean the file is wrong.
How do I keep a color cover but make the rest of the PDF gray?
Set Pages to Selected pages and enter every page except the cover, such as 2-48. The cover keeps its color and the rest turns gray in the same file.
Does the Contrast slider change text color as well?
It mainly affects images such as scans and photos, darkening dark tones and lightening light ones. Raise it a little for faded photocopies; keep it at 0 for photos you want to look natural.
