Compress PDF to 800 KB

800 KB is the size people pick when one limit has to cover several files, or when a 1 MB rule needs real headroom. It holds a multi-page scan with readable text and recognizable photos, and this page starts at exactly that target.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the PDFs

Add one document or up to 20, each up to 95 MB: scans from a phone app, exports from Word or Google Docs, statements downloaded from a bank.

  2. 2

Leave the target at 800 KB

Compress by is on Target size with 800 KB. Every file in the batch gets its own 800 KB budget, so five documents end up at about 4 MB together.

  3. 3

    Compress and check the sizes

Press Compress, download the files one by one or as a ZIP, and confirm each is under 800 KB before attaching them.

Answer

How do I compress a PDF to 800 KB?

Upload the PDF and press Compress: the target is already 800 KB. Images are re-encoded and downsampled only as far as needed, and the text stays sharp.

When an 800 KB PDF is the right target

Most limits you meet are round numbers, 500 KB, 1 MB, 2 MB, and 800 KB is rarely the rule itself. It is the answer to two situations. The first is a total budget: an application portal that allows, say, 4 MB across five attachments, or a mailbox that bounces anything over a few megabytes, divides neatly into 800 KB per document. The second is headroom under a 1 MB field when the file may still grow, for example after you add a signature or the portal adds a cover sheet.

Both cases are common in rental applications, insurance claims and job portals, where pay slips, bank statements, ID scans and reference letters go up together. A phone scanner app typically saves each page at several hundred KB in color, so a five-page bundle easily reaches 3 MB before compression.

Keeping quality at 800 KB

Most of a scanned PDF's weight is images, so that is where the tool works first: it re-encodes page images as JPEG and lowers their resolution only when quality alone is not enough. Lowest image quality sets the floor; below it the tool reduces resolution rather than letting letters break into blocks. Subset fonts and Remove metadata trim the rest, and PDF 1.5 object streams, part of the format since 2003 and of ISO 32000-1 since 2008, pack the file's internal structure tighter.

Built-in options are blunter. The Reduce File Size filter in macOS Preview often drops images to a resolution that makes small print fuzzy, with no target to aim at. If your document starts as photos rather than a PDF, image to PDF under 1 MB builds it at a controlled size, and our guide to scanning documents to PDF shows how to scan smaller in the first place.

800 KB PDF questions

How many pages fit in an 800 KB PDF?

A text document exported from Word can hold hundreds. For scans, plan on roughly 8 to 15 grayscale pages at 150 DPI, or 4 to 8 pages in color; dense photos and colored backgrounds take the most room. These are typical ranges, not guarantees, because every scan differs.

Why choose 800 KB when the form allows 1 MB?

Headroom. Some systems count 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes, some add a cover page or a stamp after upload, and a filled form can grow when you sign it. 800 KB absorbs all of that; if you only need a small margin, compress PDF to 900 KB keeps more quality.

How do I split a 4 MB total upload limit across five files?

Divide the total by the number of files, 4 MB ÷ 5 = 800 KB, and compress each document to that target in one batch here. Leave a few KB spare per file, since the portal may count in thousands of bytes.

Can I combine several PDFs and still end up under 800 KB?

Yes. Join them with merge PDF first, then compress the merged file here, so the 800 KB budget is spread over all pages instead of each part being squeezed separately.

Is 800 KB enough for photos inside a PDF report?

For a short report, yes. Images stay recognizable at the quality an 800 KB target usually allows, and charts with flat colors compress especially well. A portfolio of full-page photos needs a larger target.

Why is the compressed file only a little smaller than before?

It was already efficient: a PDF made from text, or one that was compressed once before, has little left to remove. If it is already under 800 KB, the tool leaves it nearly unchanged instead of lowering quality for nothing.
