Compress Image to 2 MB
A 2 MB cap is loose enough that most photos keep every pixel when brought under it. Upload a camera or phone image and it comes back at or just under 2 MB, at the highest quality that fits.

Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Never shrink below this width when downscaling. 0 means no minimum.
Optionally set the dimensions before compressing. Forms that specify pixels as well as KB need both.
Pixels for the side you chose above.
The search for the target size will not go below this quality; it downscales instead.
4:2:0 halves color resolution and saves a lot on photos; 4:4:4 keeps sharp edges on text, logos and screenshots.
Lossy PNG quantises colors (like TinyPNG) and is far smaller; lossless keeps every pixel.
How to use this tool
- 1
Select your photos
Add up to 20 images, each up to 95 MB. Camera JPEGs, iPhone HEIC, PNG and WebP are all accepted.
- 2
Check the 2 MB target
Target size reads 2 with Unit set to MB. To turn HEIC or PNG into JPG at the same time, pick JPG under Output format.
- 3
Press Compress
Download the files one by one or together. Uploads are deleted from the server 30 minutes after processing.
Two megabytes is the limit you meet when a site runs on default server settings, and it is the point where a modern phone photo is only slightly too big, so getting under it should cost almost nothing you can see.
Where you run into a 2 MB image limit
The most common source is a default rather than a policy. PHP, which runs WordPress and a large share of contact and booking forms, ships with upload_max_filesize set to 2M, so unless the host has changed it, the media library reads “Maximum upload file size: 2 MB”. Many club, school and small business sites never change it.
Other 2 MB limits are deliberate. YouTube refuses custom thumbnails over 2 MB, and classified and listing sites often cap each photo at a few megabytes so their servers can make thumbnails quickly. Email works as a total instead: Gmail allows 25 MB per message, so photos at 2 MB each let you send a full set in one email.
| Where | Limit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted WordPress and PHP forms | Often 2 MB | PHP's default upload_max_filesize; hosts may raise it |
| YouTube custom thumbnails | 2 MB | 1280 × 720 px recommended; JPG, PNG or GIF |
| Gmail | 25 MB per message | About a dozen 2 MB photos fit |
| Listing and classified sites | Varies, often a few MB | Check the upload page; extra pixels rarely show in the listing |
Resize image to 2 MB and keep the full resolution
A 12 MP phone photo straight from the camera is typically 2.5–5 MB as JPEG and somewhat less as HEIC. Getting it to 2 MB usually means a JPG quality in the 80s, a drop that is hard to see even zoomed in. The tool searches for that quality directly and only reduces dimensions when the picture would need less than Lowest quality allowed. A 48 MP or 50 MP frame is different: with four times the pixels, reaching 2 MB will often involve some downscaling.
WordPress adds a step of its own. Since version 5.3 it makes a scaled copy of any upload wider or taller than 2560 px and uses that copy on the page. If the photo is headed for WordPress, set Resize first to 2560 px on the longest side under Advanced settings: you keep exactly the pixels WordPress would keep, comfortably under 2 MB. For a document with the same cap, use compress PDF to 2 MB.
Reduce image size to 2 MB: three habits that help
Aim a little below the cap
Sites disagree on whether 2 MB means 2,000,000 or 2,097,152 bytes. Switching Unit to KB and entering 1900 clears both.
Convert HEIC in the same step
Pick JPG under Output format so the photo is converted and compressed in one encode instead of two.
Start from the original
Every lossy save adds artifacts. Use the camera file, not a copy that has already passed through a chat app.
2 MB image questions
Why does WordPress say my image exceeds the maximum upload file size?
That limit comes from the server's PHP settings, and 2 MB is PHP's out-of-the-box value. Compressing the photo to 2 MB is the quickest fix when you cannot change the hosting configuration; site owners can also ask their host to raise upload_max_filesize.
Will a 2 MB photo still print well?
Usually. A 12 MP photo compressed to 2 MB normally keeps its 4032 × 3024 px, enough for a print of about 10 × 13 in at 300 DPI. JPG quality in the 80s shows no visible difference on paper.
How many 2 MB photos fit in one Gmail message?
Gmail allows 25 MB of attachments per message, so roughly a dozen, a few fewer to be safe. Above the limit Gmail offers to send a Google Drive link instead of attaching the files.
My photo is HEIC. Can the result be a 2 MB JPG?
Yes. Choose JPG under Output format and the photo is converted while it is compressed, in a single encode. The HEIC to JPG guide covers why some sites still refuse HEIC.
What if my image is already under 2 MB?
It is still processed with the page settings, so it may come back a little smaller, but it is never padded to reach 2 MB. Leave it as it is unless the site also wants a different format.
Is 2 MB a sensible size for a photo on a web page?
It is more than a page needs. Upload the 2 MB file where the site makes its own resized copies, as WordPress does, and use compress image to 300 KB when you place images on a page directly.
