Answer

Can you turn a PDF into an Excel spreadsheet for free?

Yes. Upload the PDF, keep the defaults and press Convert to XLSX (Excel). Every table the converter finds becomes a sheet with one value per cell, including tables on scanned pages.

How a PDF table becomes a spreadsheet

A PDF has no idea it contains a table. It stores text fragments at x and y positions and, separately, the lines that draw the grid. To rebuild a spreadsheet, the converter groups fragments that share a baseline into rows, finds the vertical gaps or ruled lines that separate columns, and assigns each fragment to a cell. Tables with visible borders convert most reliably; borderless tables that rely on alignment alone still work, but columns of free-form text can drift.

Numbers are written as numbers, not as text that looks like numbers, whenever the format is unambiguous: 1,250.00 and 1.250,00 are both read according to the separators used throughout the table. Dates stay as written so that 03/04 does not silently become the wrong month.

Portable Document Format

PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

XLSX

Microsoft Excel workbook

XLSX is Microsoft Excel's default workbook format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard. It stores multiple sheets, formulas, formatting, charts, pivot tables and data validation in a ZIP package of XML. It supports over a million rows per sheet and is the default exchange format for business spreadsheets. Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers open XLSX, though macros and advanced features may not carry over.

People convert PDF to Excel because figures locked in a PDF cannot be added up, sorted or charted until each number sits in its own spreadsheet cell.

Checking the workbook before you rely on it

Spend a minute on three checks. Add up one numeric column and compare it with the total printed in the PDF; a match means no rows were dropped or merged. Scroll the last column for values that spilled over from a wide description. And look at the first row of every sheet, since that is where split headers show up.

Scanned statements deserve a closer look at digits that OCR can confuse, such as 5 and 6 or 1 and 7 in a faint print. Choosing the right Document language helps with separators and month names. If your source is a photo of a table rather than a PDF, the image to Excel tool reads it directly.

PDF to Excel FAQ

How do I convert a bank statement PDF to Excel?

Upload the statement, keep Tables only checked so the bank's address block and disclaimers are skipped, and choose Everything on one sheet if the transaction table continues across pages. You get one continuous list of dates, descriptions and amounts that you can filter or total straight away.

Why are my numbers showing as text in Excel?

Usually because the PDF printed them with symbols Excel does not read as numbers, like a trailing minus sign, a currency code inside the cell, or a thin space as the thousands separator. Select the column, use Data then Text to Columns and finish, or multiply by 1 in a helper column to force numeric values.

Can Excel open a PDF by itself?

Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows has a From PDF data connector under Data, Get Data, From File. It works well on clean digital PDFs but cannot read scans and needs Power Query steps for each table. Older Excel versions and Excel for Mac do not have it.

Will merged cells and multi-line headers survive?

Merged header cells are recreated where the converter can see the borders. Headers split over two lines are joined into one cell. Check the header row after conversion, because a header that spans columns is the most common place a table needs a manual tweak.

What if I also need the paragraphs around the tables?

Uncheck Tables only to export running text too, though a spreadsheet is a poor place for prose. If the document is mostly text with a few tables, PDF to Word is the better fit, because Word keeps tables as tables and text as paragraphs.

Is it free and is my statement kept anywhere?

It is free with no account. Statements and the generated workbook are deleted from the server 30 minutes after processing, and nothing is read by a person.
