How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Choose your PDFs

Add up to 20 PDF files, 95 MB each, by dragging them in or using the file picker. Nothing to install and no sign-up.

  2. 2

    Keep exact layout or switch

Layout is set to Exact layout here so columns, margins and image positions stay put. Change it to Flowing text under Advanced settings if you plan to rewrite long passages.

  3. 3

    Download the .docx

Press Convert to DOCX (Word). Files come back individually or together as a ZIP, ready to open in any modern word processor.

A DOCX file is a ZIP archive of XML parts: one for the text, one for styles, one for each image and a few for settings. Rename a .docx to .zip and you can open it to see them. That openness is why every major editor supports it, and why a PDF converted to DOCX moves between programs more reliably than any other editable format.

How DOCX replaced the old .doc format

  1. 1997

    Binary .doc

Word 97 introduces the binary .doc format that Word 2000, XP and 2003 keep using.

  2. 2006

    ECMA-376

Office Open XML is approved as a standard by Ecma International.

  3. 2007

    DOCX by default

Word 2007 saves .docx unless you choose otherwise; older files open in Compatibility Mode.

  4. 2008

    ISO/IEC 29500

The format becomes an international standard, which other editors implement.

  5. 2013

    Word opens PDFs

Word 2013 adds PDF Reflow, an in-app way to turn simple PDFs into DOCX.

The practical upshot: a .docx made today opens in Word 2007 and every later version on Windows and Mac, in Word for the web, and in free editors. You do not need to pick a Word version when converting, and the file will not open in Compatibility Mode, because it is written against the current format rather than flagged for an older release.

The cases where DOCX is the wrong choice are narrow. A colleague still running Word 2003 needs a .doc, and an organization that has standardized on OpenDocument may ask for ODT; both are available from the same uploader under Convert to. For plain archiving with no editing in mind, keeping the PDF is better, and PDF to text is enough when you only need the words for search or analysis.

PDF and DOCX side by side

PDF

Portable Document Format

PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

DOCX

Microsoft Word document

DOCX is Microsoft Word's default document format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard (ECMA-376, ISO/IEC 29500). It is a ZIP package of XML files holding text, styles, images, tables, comments and tracked changes. It is the most common format for editable documents in offices, schools and job applications. Layout can shift slightly between Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages, especially with complex formatting. Most word processors open DOCX files.

People ask for DOCX specifically when a form, an editor or a submission system demands the Office Open XML file, not just something that opens in Word.

DOCX conversion FAQ

Is DOCX the same as Word?

DOCX is the file format; Word is one of the programs that edits it. Since Office 2007 Word saves .docx by default, and LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages, Google Docs and WPS Office all read and write it, so a .docx is the safest editable document to hand to someone else.

Why does Word say Compatibility Mode when I open a file?

Compatibility Mode appears when a document was saved in an older format, such as a .doc from Word 97–2003, or a .docx flagged for an earlier Word version. Some newer features are switched off so the file stays editable in that older version. Files from this converter are current DOCX, so they open in normal mode; for old .doc files use DOC to DOCX.

Can Word 2003 open the DOCX I download?

Not on its own. Word 2003 and earlier only understand the binary .doc format. Microsoft released a free Compatibility Pack that let Office 2000, XP and 2003 read DOCX, but those versions are long out of support, so the better option is any current word processor.

Why is exact layout the default on this page?

People searching for PDF to DOCX often need a faithful copy: a form to refill, a layout to reuse, a document to archive in an editable format. Exact layout keeps every block where it was. If you mainly want to rewrite text, PDF to Word is set up for flowing paragraphs instead.

Do I need an account or a paid plan?

No. There is no sign-up, no watermark in the document and no daily conversion cap. The per-batch limits are 20 files and 95 MB per file, and every upload is removed after 30 minutes.

Will hyperlinks and bookmarks survive?

Clickable web links in the PDF are written as Word hyperlinks. Internal PDF bookmarks have no direct DOCX equivalent, so the outline is not rebuilt as a Word navigation pane; headings that look like headings are still detected and styled as such.
