PDF to Google Docs Converter

Google Drive can open a PDF in Google Docs, but it often drops tables, images and layout, and it reads only part of a long scan. Convert the PDF to DOCX here first, then upload that to Drive and Docs imports it with the structure intact.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload your PDF

Add the PDF (or up to 20 of them). Files up to 95 MB are accepted, far beyond the size Drive's built-in text recognition handles.

  2. 2

    Convert to DOCX

Press Convert to DOCX (Word). Flowing text is preselected because Google Docs edits paragraphs, not positioned text boxes.

  3. 3

    Open it in Google Docs

In Google Drive choose New then File upload, pick the downloaded .docx, then open it and choose File then Save as Google Docs if you want a native Docs file.

What happens when Drive opens a PDF as Google Docs

Right-clicking a PDF in Google Drive and choosing Open with then Google Docs runs Google's text recognition on the file and drops the result into a new Doc. It was built for extracting text, not for preserving documents. Google's own help pages say formatting may not be kept, and the result tends to be one long column of paragraphs with images missing and tables flattened into lines of words.

There are size limits as well. Google states that this conversion works best on files of 2 MB or less and reads only the first 10 pages of a PDF, so a 40-page scanned contract comes out as a quarter of a contract. A dedicated converter does not have that cutoff: every page, up to 95 MB per file, is processed and written into the DOCX.

PDF

Portable Document Format

PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

DOCX

Microsoft Word document

DOCX is Microsoft Word's default document format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard (ECMA-376, ISO/IEC 29500). It is a ZIP package of XML files holding text, styles, images, tables, comments and tracked changes. It is the most common format for editable documents in offices, schools and job applications. Layout can shift slightly between Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages, especially with complex formatting. Most word processors open DOCX files.

People route a PDF through DOCX on the way to Google Docs because Drive's direct PDF import loses tables and images, while a DOCX import keeps them for shared editing.

Use Flowing text so Docs receives normal paragraphs.Use Exact layout for Docs; positioned frames become awkward text boxes.
Pick the scan's Document language before converting.Rely on Drive's PDF reader for scans longer than ten pages.
Convert only the pages you need with Pages to convert.Upload a password-protected PDF; unlock it first.
Turn on Drive's Convert uploads setting if you always want native Docs files.Expect multi-column brochures to stay in columns after editing.

If you live in Word rather than Docs, the same file works there: PDF to Word explains the layout choices in more depth. When the edited Doc is final, download it from Google Docs as PDF with File then Download, or bring it back through DOCX to PDF if you saved it as Word.

PDF to Docs questions

Why not just open the PDF with Google Docs in Drive?

You can, and for a short text-only PDF it works. Drive's conversion keeps plain text but usually strips tables, columns and many images, and for scans it only reads the first pages. Converting to DOCX first keeps those elements, and Docs imports DOCX far more faithfully than it reads PDF.

Do I have to convert the DOCX into a Google Docs file?

No. Google Docs can edit a .docx in Office editing mode and save changes back to the same .docx, which is handy when the file must go back to someone using Word. Use Save as Google Docs only if you want comments, suggestions and sharing to work like any native Doc.

Is there a size limit when importing into Google Docs?

Google lists 50 MB as the maximum for a document file converted to Google Docs format, and a converted document can hold up to 1.02 million characters. A typical text-heavy report is far below both. If your PDF is mostly large images, turn off Keep images to keep the DOCX small.

Can I do this on a phone?

Yes. Convert in your mobile browser, save the .docx to Files or Downloads, then upload it from the Google Drive app and open it in the Google Docs app. The steps are the same on iPhone and Android.

Will my scanned PDF become editable in Docs?

Yes, as long as OCR runs. Leave Text recognition (OCR) on Auto and set the right Document language; recognized text goes into the DOCX as real paragraphs that Docs treats like typed text. For scans of photos rather than pages, image to text is the closer tool.

Does the PDF have to be public or shared with anyone?

No. You upload it only to the converter, which deletes it after 30 minutes, and then to your own Drive. The privacy policy lists exactly what is logged.
