Got the deck as a PDF but not the original PowerPoint? Convert it back into a .pptx where each page is a slide made of text boxes, shapes and pictures, so you can fix a figure, swap the logo or present it with your own notes.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the PDF deck

Drag in the PDF, or up to 20 of them, each at most 95 MB. Handouts, exported decks and scanned slides all work.

  2. 2

    Keep exact layout

This page starts with Layout set to Exact layout, which puts every element where it was on the page. Leave Keep images on so charts and photos come across.

  3. 3

    Convert and present

Press Convert to PPTX (PowerPoint) and download. Open the file in PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides or LibreOffice Impress.

One PDF page in, one editable PowerPoint slide out, with text you can click into and images you can move.

When a PDF needs to become a presentation again

Most PDF decks started life in PowerPoint and were exported so they would look the same on every screen. That works until you need to change something: a speaker sends slides as PDF the night before, a client shares last year's pitch without the source file, or a lecturer posts handouts that you want to adapt for your own class. Retyping thirty slides takes hours.

The converter rebuilds every page as a slide. Text is placed in text boxes with the original font size and color where the font is available, vector shapes and charts are kept as shapes or pictures, and photos are extracted at their stored resolution. With Exact layout the slide matches the page; Flowing text is available too, but it suits documents better than slides.

The PDF was not a deck in the first place? A report or a brochure converts better to PDF to Word, and if you only need slide images for a website or a chat message, PDF to JPG is quicker.

Portable Document Format

PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

PPTX

Microsoft PowerPoint presentation

PPTX is Microsoft PowerPoint's default presentation format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard. It stores slides, layouts, images, charts, speaker notes, transitions and embedded media in a ZIP package of XML. It is the most widely used format for slide decks in business and education. Google Slides, Keynote and LibreOffice Impress open PPTX, though fonts, animations and layout may change slightly.

People convert PDF to PPT when the original deck is lost or belongs to someone else and they need to edit, reuse or present the slides rather than just view them.

Three things to tidy after converting PDF to PowerPoint

  1. Check the fonts

If the deck used a brand font you do not have installed, PowerPoint substitutes one. Install the font or replace it across the deck with Replace Fonts on the Home tab.

  2. Group related boxes

A bullet list sometimes arrives as several text boxes. Select them and merge the text into one box so the list reflows when you edit it.

  3. Swap in sharp images

Photos come out at the resolution stored in the PDF. If the PDF was compressed for email, replace key images with the originals before presenting on a large screen.

PDF to PPT questions

Can PowerPoint open a PDF directly?

No. PowerPoint can insert a PDF page as a picture or an embedded object, but it cannot turn the page into editable text and shapes. Google Slides and Keynote cannot import a PDF as slides either, which is why a converter is needed to get a deck back.

Will the slides be 16:9 or 4:3?

Each slide takes the proportions of its PDF page. A deck exported from PowerPoint at the default widescreen size comes back as 16:9 slides; a document printed on Letter or A4 paper comes back as portrait slides. You can change the slide size afterward under Design and Slide Size in PowerPoint.

Are animations and transitions restored?

No. A PDF records only what each slide looked like, not how it moved, so builds, transitions, embedded video and speaker notes are not part of the file. You get the final state of every slide, ready to animate again.

How do I convert a PDF to PPT on a phone?

Open this page in your phone's browser, upload the PDF from Files or Downloads and convert. The PowerPoint, Google Slides and Keynote apps all open the downloaded .pptx for viewing and light editing.

Can I convert only a few slides?

Yes. Under Advanced settings switch Pages to convert to Selected pages and enter the page numbers, for example 4-9. This is handy when you only want to reuse a few slides from a long conference deck.

How do I turn my edited deck back into a PDF?

Use PowerPoint's Export option, or run the file through PPTX to PDF if you are on a machine without Office. Both keep fonts and layout fixed for sharing.
