Reading US package labels
American food labels state net weight in ounces, and once a package reaches a pound they usually add the pound figure in parentheses, along with grams. A bag marked NET WT 24 OZ (1 LB 8 OZ) 680 g is one and a half pounds. Cans, cereal boxes and coffee bags trade on this: a 12 oz bag of coffee is three quarters of a pound, a size that replaced the traditional one-pound can in many stores.
Comparing unit prices is the practical reason to convert. A 28 oz jar at $4.20 costs $2.40 per pound, while a 16 oz jar at $2.60 costs $2.60 per pound, so the bigger jar is cheaper per unit even though the shelf tag may show price per ounce instead.
How to convert ounces to pounds
lb = oz ÷ 16
1 oz = 0.0625 lb
25 oz ÷ 16 = 1.5625 lb
- Start with the value in ounces.
- Divide it by 16, which is the same as multiplying by 0.0625.
- Round the result to the precision the job needs: whole numbers for everyday use, more decimals for engineering or recipes.
Getting pounds and ounces, not just decimals
Divide by 16 and keep the whole number as pounds; the remainder is the ounces left over. 54 oz ÷ 16 is 3 with 6 left, so 54 oz is 3 lb 6 oz, or 3.375 lb as a decimal. Shipping software usually wants the decimal, while a recipe or a baby book wants pounds and ounces.
Carriers in the US round up to the next whole ounce or pound depending on the service, so a 15.2 oz parcel may be billed as 16 oz, which is exactly 1 lb.

Weight ounces and fluid ounces
An ounce on a label can mean weight (oz, NET WT) or volume (fl oz). Only weight ounces convert to pounds by dividing by 16. A 64 fl oz carton of juice is half a US gallon of liquid, and it weighs a little over 4 lb, but that is a property of the juice, not a unit conversion. For volume, use milliliters to fluid ounces instead.
The reverse direction is on pounds to ounces, and the unit converter covers grams, kilograms and stone too.
