Milligrams to Grams

One gram is 1,000 milligrams, so divide milligrams by 1,000 to get grams: a 500 mg tablet holds 0.5 g and 2,300 mg of sodium is 2.3 g. Type a value below to convert it.

Where milligrams show up

Milligrams are the unit of medicine, supplements and nutrition labels. Common pain-relief tablets come in 200 mg, 325 mg or 500 mg strengths; a 500 mg paracetamol tablet contains 0.5 g of the active ingredient, and the usual adult daily ceiling of 4,000 mg is 4 g. Supplement bottles list vitamin C, calcium and magnesium in milligrams, and US nutrition labels give sodium and cholesterol the same way.

Converting to grams helps you compare against guidance written in larger units. The US Daily Value for sodium is 2,300 mg, or 2.3 g, which matches about 5.8 g of table salt because salt is roughly 40% sodium by mass. The FDA cites 400 mg of caffeine a day, 0.4 g, as an amount not generally linked to harmful effects in healthy adults.

How to convert milligrams to grams

Formula

g = mg × 0.001

1 mg = 0.001 g

Example

25 mg × 0.001 = 0.025 g

  1. Start with the value in milligrams.
  2. Multiply it by 0.001.
  3. Round the result to the precision the job needs: whole numbers for everyday use, more decimals for engineering or recipes.

How small a milligram is

A milligram is one thousandth of a gram and one millionth of a kilogram. A single grain of table salt weighs around 0.06 mg, a mosquito about 2 to 3 mg, and a typical paper clip close to 1,000 mg, which is 1 g. Ordinary kitchen scales resolve 1 g at best, so weighing out milligram amounts needs a jeweler's or laboratory balance.

That size gap is why doses are given in milligrams in the first place: writing 0.0005 g for a 0.5 mg medicine would invite errors that a whole number avoids.

The mg, mcg and mL confusion

The most dangerous slip on this page is reading mcg (micrograms, also written µg) as mg. A microgram is a thousand times smaller than a milligram, so 50 mcg of vitamin D is 0.05 mg and 0.00005 g. Mixing up mg and mL is the other one: milligrams measure mass, milliliters measure volume, and a liquid medicine states how many mg are in each 5 mL. Always follow the label or a pharmacist rather than a conversion when it comes to doses.

For larger masses, continue with grams to kilograms, or switch units freely in the unit converter.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams is 250 mg?
250 mg is 0.25 g, a quarter of a gram.
Is 1,000 mg the same as 1 g?
Yes. The prefix milli means one thousandth, so 1,000 mg is exactly 1 g.
What is the difference between mg and mcg?
One milligram equals 1,000 micrograms. Labels for vitamins such as B12, D and folate often use mcg, so check the unit before comparing numbers.
How many grams of sodium is 1,500 mg?
1,500 mg of sodium is 1.5 g. That is about 3.8 g of table salt.
Can I convert mg to mL directly?
No. Milligrams are mass and milliliters are volume. You need the concentration printed on the product, for example 160 mg per 5 mL, to turn one into the other.
