Kilograms to Grams
Multiply kilograms by 1,000 to get grams, because one kilogram is defined as exactly 1,000 grams: 0.4 kg is 400 g and 2.25 kg is 2,250 g. Enter a value below for an instant answer.
1 kilogram = 1,000 grams

Why you would want grams at all
Kilograms are the right size for people, luggage and sacks of flour, but they get awkward below one. A baker scaling a recipe from a 1 kg bag of flour wants to weigh out 350 g, not 0.35 kg, because a digital kitchen scale reads in whole grams and a whole number is harder to misread than a decimal. Pharmacies, jewelers and lab technicians go further and work in grams or milligrams for the same reason.
Food labeling follows the same logic. Across the EU, the UK and much of the world, nutrition facts are given per 100 g, so converting a 1.2 kg pack into 1,200 g tells you instantly that it contains twelve of those reference portions.
A ratio that has never moved
The kilogram is the SI base unit of mass, and since 20 May 2019 it has been defined by fixing the Planck constant at 6.62607015 × 10⁻³⁴ joule-seconds. The gram is simply the kilogram divided by 1,000, so whatever happens to the definition of the kilogram, the factor between the two stays exactly 1,000.
Everyday anchors help when you are estimating. A liter of water is about 1,000 g, a US nickel is 5 g, a standard sheet of A4 printer paper is about 5 g at 80 gsm, and a medium apple is roughly 150 to 200 g.

Small kilograms, big mistakes
Short decimals are where errors creep in. 0.05 kg is 50 g, not 500 g; count the places carefully or let the converter do it. Postage is a common case: a 0.08 kg letter is 80 g, which can sit just under or just over a 100 g price step.
To go back from grams, use the grams to kilograms page. If the recipe is American and lists pounds or ounces, the ounces to grams converter handles that step.
Frequently asked questions
- How many grams is 1.5 kg?
- 1.5 kg is 1,500 grams.
- How many grams are in a quarter of a kilo?
- A quarter kilogram is 250 g. Half a kilo is 500 g and three quarters is 750 g.
- What is 0.03 kg in grams?
- 0.03 kg is 30 g. Multiply by 1,000 by moving the decimal point three places to the right.
- Does the 2019 kilogram redefinition change kg to g conversions?
- No. The redefinition changed how the kilogram is realized in a laboratory, not its size, and a gram is still exactly one thousandth of it.
- Is 1 kg of flour the same volume as 1 kg of sugar?
- No. Mass is equal but volume differs: 1 kg of granulated sugar is about 5 US cups, while 1 kg of all-purpose flour is roughly 8 cups because flour is less dense.
