PDF to JSON Converter
Pull the tables out of a PDF and get them back as JSON records. The header row supplies the keys, every table row becomes an object, and the result loads straight into code.

Character that separates columns in CSV and text files, for both reading and writing. Auto detects it from the input and writes commas.
UTF-8 works for every language. Choose UTF-8 with BOM if Excel on Windows shows garbled accents or Asian characters when opening the CSV.
Excel, ODS and Numbers input: convert the first sheet only, or every sheet (one CSV per sheet in a ZIP, or one JSON key per sheet).
Name of the sheet tab in the new spreadsheet, up to 31 characters.
Array of objects uses column names as keys for every row; array of arrays is more compact and keeps the header as the first array.
Name of the outer element that wraps all rows; each row becomes a <row> inside it.
Used in CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements. Letters, digits and underscores only.
Quoting and column types differ slightly between databases; pick the one you will import into.
Rewrite date cells in one format. ISO (2026-10-18) is safest for databases and code; keep leaves them as they appear in the source.
How to use this tool
- 1
Upload the PDF
Add a statement, a price list or a report that contains tables. Up to 20 PDFs per batch, 95 MB each.
- 2
Pick the JSON shape
JSON structure starts at Array of objects. Switch to Array of arrays under Advanced settings when the table has no usable header row.
- 3
Convert and check
Press Convert to JSON, download the file and compare a few records with the PDF before your script relies on it.
PDF to JSON reads the tables in a PDF and writes each row as a JSON object, using the column headers as keys, so data locked in a printable document becomes something code can loop over.
Why a PDF does not know it contains a table
Adobe introduced PDF in 1993 to make a page look the same everywhere, and the format, standardized as ISO 32000-1 in 2008, still thinks in terms of pages. Inside the file, a table is a set of text fragments drawn at x and y coordinates, often with a few lines painted between them. There is no row, no column and no header unless the author exported a tagged PDF, an option added in PDF 1.4 that many tools still skip.
Getting JSON out therefore means rebuilding the grid: grouping fragments that share a baseline into rows, finding the vertical gaps that separate columns, and treating the top row as names. It works well on PDFs exported from accounting software, spreadsheets and reporting tools, where every cell sits on a clean line. It struggles with tables drawn by hand in a layout program, with cells that span several columns, and with anything scanned.
Who converts PDF to JSON, and for what
Invoice and statement parsing
A developer receives supplier invoices or bank statements as PDFs and needs line items as records to match against orders.
Published reference tables
Tariffs, rate cards and price lists often appear only as PDFs. JSON lets an app or a website load them without retyping.
Test data and prototypes
A product team turns a table from a spec document into fixtures for tests or a mock API.

Portable Document Format
PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

JSON
JavaScript Object Notation
JSON is a lightweight text format for structured data, popularised by Douglas Crockford in the early 2000s and standardised as RFC 8259 and ECMA-404. It represents objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans and null with simple, readable syntax. It is the default format for web APIs, configuration files and data exchange between apps in almost every programming language. It has no comments, dates or schemas built in, and large nested files are hard to read without a viewer.

PDF goes to JSON when a document published for reading has to feed a program: invoice lines into an accounting script, a published rate table into an app, or a report's figures into an API call.
PDF to JSON questions
Can I convert a scanned PDF to JSON?
Not directly. A scan is a picture of a page, with no characters for a converter to read. Run it through text recognition first with the image to text tools, then convert the recognized table.
Where do the keys in the JSON come from?
From the first row of each table while First row is header is on, so a column titled Amount becomes the key Amount in every record. If row 1 is already data, turn the setting off and choose Array of arrays, which writes each row as a plain list.
Why are amounts like €1.234,50 still strings?
JSON numbers, as RFC 8259 defines them, allow digits, one dot, a minus sign and an exponent, nothing else. A currency sign or a thousands separator makes the value text. Strip the symbol in your code, or clean the column in a spreadsheet first.
Is JSON or CSV the better target for a PDF table?
JSON when the next reader is code, because keys travel with every value and nested results are possible later. CSV when the next reader is a spreadsheet or an import screen; PDF to CSV writes the same rows as plain lines.
Does the JSON keep any of the PDF's layout?
No. Fonts, colors, page breaks, logos and the position of the table on the page are presentation, and JSON only carries values. What you get is the content of the cells, in reading order.
