Megabytes to Kilobytes
Each megabyte contains one thousand kilobytes in decimal units, so multiply megabytes by 1,000 to get kilobytes: 2 MB is 2,000 KB and 0.3 MB is 300 KB. In binary units 1 MiB is 1,024 KiB, so the same 2 MB reads as 2,048 KiB.
1 megabyte = 1,000 kilobytes
1 MB = 1,000 KB · multiply by 1,000
Turning a megabyte limit into a kilobyte target
Upload forms state limits in megabytes, but Windows File Explorer lists most documents in its KB column, so you end up comparing 1,870 KB with a 2 MB rule. If the site counts a megabyte as 1,000,000 bytes, a 2 MB cap is 2,000,000 bytes, which Explorer displays as about 1,953 KB because it divides by 1,024. A 1 MB cap becomes roughly 976 KB in the same view.
That is the number to aim below when you check a file on Windows. On a Mac, Finder already divides by 1,000, so a file must simply show under 1,000 KB for a 1 MB cap. When a scan comes out at 3 or 4 MB, compress PDF to 1 MB gets it under the line without retyping anything.
Decimal and binary in one table
The SI prefixes are powers of 1,000: 1 MB = 1,000 KB = 1,000,000 bytes. The IEC binary prefixes, standardized in 1998, are powers of 1,024: 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB = 1,048,576 bytes. Network speeds, drive capacities and macOS follow the first set; RAM sizes, Windows and many programming tools follow the second, though Windows keeps the old KB and MB labels.
The difference is small for a single file (4.9% at the megabyte level) but decides whether a borderline upload is accepted. If a portal says 500 KB and your file is 0.5 MB, convert both to bytes to be sure: 500,000 bytes is the safe ceiling.

Kilobytes still matter on the web
Web performance budgets are usually written in kilobytes. Many guides suggest keeping a large hero image in the low hundreds of kilobytes, and thumbnails much smaller, because every 1 MB image adds noticeable load time on mobile networks. Converting the megabyte size of a camera photo to kilobytes shows how far it has to shrink; compress image to 100 KB is a common target. The reverse direction is on KB to MB.
Frequently asked questions
- How many kilobytes are in a megabyte?
- 1,000 KB in decimal units, as used by the SI and macOS. In binary units, 1 MiB is 1,024 KiB.
- What is 1.5 MB in KB?
- 1,500 KB, or 1,536 KiB if you count in binary steps.
- What KB size does Windows show for a file just under 2 MB?
- A file of 1,999,999 bytes appears as 1,954 KB in File Explorer, because Windows divides bytes by 1,024 and rounds up.
- Is 900 KB under a 1 MB limit?
- Yes, by either definition. 900 KB is at most 921,600 bytes, below both 1,000,000 and 1,048,576 bytes.
