European football on American afternoons
The UEFA Champions League kicks off its evening matches at 9:00 PM Central European time, which is 3:00 PM Eastern; the earlier 6:45 PM games start at 12:45 PM. That is why many East Coast fans watch from the office or a bar at lunchtime. Weekend league games in Spain, Germany and Italy fill East Coast mornings, and Formula 1's European races, which usually start at 3:00 PM local time, begin at 9:00 AM Eastern.
In spring 2027 the US changes its clocks on March 14 and Europe on March 28. During those two weeks every European kickoff is one hour later on the East Coast: a 9:00 PM Champions League match starts at 4:00 PM Eastern.

Eastbound flights lose six hours. A 6:00 PM departure from JFK or Newark spends roughly seven and a half hours in the air and lands in Paris or Frankfurt around 7:30 AM the next morning. Westbound, the clock barely moves: you leave Europe at midday and arrive in New York in the mid-afternoon.
