What does the DOCX to PDF converter change in my file?
It renders every page exactly as Word lays it out, embeds the fonts, strips the hidden author and company fields, and leaves comments out, so the PDF is ready to upload.
DOCX to PDF online for applications and filings
The .docx format arrived with Word 2007 and was standardized as Office Open XML, first by Ecma International as ECMA-376 in 2006 and then as ISO/IEC 29500 in 2008. Rename a .docx to .zip and you will see what it really is: a folder of XML files, images and settings. That openness makes it ideal for editing and a poor fit for submitting, because whoever opens it renders the XML again with their own fonts and their own version of Word.
That is why so many forms ask for PDF. A resume that wraps onto a second page on a recruiter's laptop, a grant narrative whose tables slide past the margin, or a legal brief whose page numbers change between computers can each cost you the submission. The PDF records the layout once, and every reviewer sees the same pages.
Word files also carry more than the visible text. The document properties often name the person who created the original template, an employer's company name, or a total editing time. On this page Remove metadata is switched on by default so that information does not ride along with a job application or a filing.
Portals that expect a PDF instead of a .docx
| Organisation | Requirement | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Federal courts (CM/ECF) | Electronic filings are submitted as PDF documents; local rules may add searchable-text or PDF/A requirements. | pacer.uscourts.gov |
| USAJOBS | Accepts PDF among other formats for resumes and supporting documents, each under 5 MB. | usajobs.gov |
| Grants.gov | Recommends PDF for application attachments so reviewers can open them as submitted. | grants.gov |
DOCX
Microsoft Word document
DOCX is Microsoft Word's default document format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard (ECMA-376, ISO/IEC 29500). It is a ZIP package of XML files holding text, styles, images, tables, comments and tracked changes. It is the most common format for editable documents in offices, schools and job applications. Layout can shift slightly between Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages, especially with complex formatting. Most word processors open DOCX files.

Portable Document Format
PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

A .docx is an editable package that portals, courts and recruiters treat as a draft; a PDF made from it is the frozen copy they file, print and parse with the same result on every system.
Why a converted .docx gets rejected, and the fix
The portal says the file type is not allowed.
It wants PDF only. Upload the PDF from this page, not the .docx, and make sure the name ends in .pdf rather than .pdf.docx.
The file is over the size limit.
Lower Image quality to 60–70 under Advanced settings and convert again; photos are usually most of the weight.
The reviewer sees tracked changes or comments.
Leave Include comments off. The PDF then shows the final text only, even if the .docx still has open revisions.
The system cannot open a password-protected PDF.
Leave Open password empty for portals; they cannot type passwords. Protect only files you send by email.
A one-page resume becomes two pages.
Check the paper size. A4 is about 6 mm narrower than US Letter, so a Letter resume forced to A4 can rewrap; keep Page size on Same as source unless the employer asked for A4.
DOCX to PDF questions
Is this a free DOCX to PDF converter, or is there a page limit?
It is free without a page limit. The only limits are 20 files per batch and 95 MB per file, which a text document with photos rarely approaches.
How do I go from DOCX to PDF on a phone?
Open this page in the phone's browser, tap the upload area and pick the .docx from Files, Google Drive or the email attachment you saved. The PDF downloads to the same Files app, ready to attach in a job portal or mail app.
Will an applicant tracking system still read my resume?
Yes, as long as the PDF contains real text. A .docx converted here keeps selectable text, unlike a scanned printout. Avoid putting your name and contact details only inside a header image or a text box, because some parsers skip both.
Why was my PDF rejected as too large?
Large PDFs nearly always come from photos or scanned signatures pasted into the document. Lower Image quality to 60 or 70 and convert again, or shrink the finished file with Compress PDF to 1 MB when a portal sets a hard cap.
Does a court accept any PDF?
Courts accept PDF but often add rules: text-searchable, no password, sometimes PDF/A. Leave Open password empty, and pick PDF/A under Convert to if the local rules ask for an archival file. Check your court's filing guide before submitting.
Can I convert the PDF back into an editable DOCX later?
Yes, with PDF to DOCX, though layouts with columns and text boxes may need touch-ups. Keeping the original .docx is always the cleaner option.
