DOC to PDF

Folders of .doc files from the Word 97–2003 years still hold contracts, minutes and family letters. Convert them to PDF, or to PDF/A for long-term storage, before the software that opens them becomes the problem.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Gather the .doc files

Upload up to 20 legacy Word documents per batch, 95 MB each. Old templates (.dot) and .wps files are accepted too.

  2. 2

    Pick PDF or PDF/A

PDF is selected. Switch Convert to to PDF/A when the files are going into an archive, a records system or a court record; PDF/A embeds every font and cannot carry a password.

  3. 3

    Convert to PDF

Press the convert button, then download each file or one ZIP for the whole batch. Files leave our server after 30 minutes.

A .doc file is a snapshot of how Word stored documents between 1997 and 2007. Turning it into PDF keeps exactly what is on the page and drops the dependency on that old format.

Converting old Word 97–2003 documents to PDF

Word 97 introduced the binary file structure that every version up to Word 2003 saved by default. Word 2007 switched the default to .docx, but .doc lived on in Save As as Word 97-2003 Document, so offices kept producing it for years to stay compatible with older computers. The result is that shared drives, email archives and scanned-paper projects are full of .doc files that nobody has opened since.

Opening them now is less reliable than it sounds. Current versions of Word show the file in Compatibility Mode, and many organizations configure the Trust Center to block or sandbox older binary formats, a policy that dates back to macro viruses such as Melissa, which spread through Word documents in 1999. Phones and web viewers often render the layout only roughly, with tables and text boxes drifting.

A PDF made from the .doc removes the guesswork. The converter reads the binary format directly on our server, lays out each page, embeds the fonts and returns a file anyone can open. For a records project, select PDF/A so the archive copy follows the ISO standard designed for long-term preservation, then merge related files with Merge PDF to keep a case or a year in one document.

DOC

Microsoft Word 97–2003 document

DOC is the binary document format used by Microsoft Word from Word 97 until Office 2007 replaced it with DOCX. It stores text, formatting, images and tables in a proprietary structure. Files are typically larger and more prone to corruption than DOCX, and newer features cannot be saved in it. Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs still open DOC files, and some older systems and organisations still require them.

Portable Document Format

PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

Legacy .doc files depend on an aging binary reader and are often blocked by security settings, so a PDF is how their content stays readable without keeping Word 97–2003 compatibility alive.

DOC to PDF questions

What is the difference between a .doc and a .docx?

.doc is the binary format of Word 97 to Word 2003. .docx, introduced with Word 2007, is a ZIP of XML files. Both convert to PDF the same way here; the .doc simply needs no Word installation to read.

Why won't my old .doc open in a recent Word?

Office's Trust Center can block older binary formats or open them in Protected View, because such files once carried macro viruses. Converting to PDF gives you a readable copy without changing those security settings.

Will macros in the .doc run during conversion?

No. Macros are code, and a PDF has nowhere to keep them. The converter reads the text, layout and images and discards the macro project, which also makes the PDF safe to forward.

Should I use PDF/A for an archive of old documents?

Yes, if the files must stay readable for decades. PDF/A, defined in ISO 19005, forbids anything that depends on outside resources, such as fonts that are not embedded or encryption. For everyday sharing, regular PDF is fine.

Can I convert the .doc to .docx instead and keep editing?

Yes. Use DOC to DOCX when the document is still in use and you want modern Word features. Convert to PDF when the content is final.

Some characters became boxes or question marks. Why?

Very old documents sometimes use fonts or code pages for symbols that no longer exist on modern systems. Open the .doc in a word processor, replace the symbol font with a current one, save, and convert again.
