Brazil's clocks since 2019

Brasília Time is UTC−3. Brazil observed summer time in its southern and southeastern states for decades, but abolished it in 2019, and the clocks have stayed put since. Before that, São Paulo moved to UTC−2 from November to February, and the gap to New York reached 3 hours in the northern winter. Now it is 2 hours in winter and 1 in summer, shifting only when the US changes clocks on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November.

Brazil has four time zones. Brasília Time covers the most populous states; Manaus and most of the Amazon are on UTC−4, one hour behind São Paulo; Acre in the far west is UTC−5; and the Fernando de Noronha islands are UTC−2.

Markets and nearshore work

Brazil's stock exchange, B3, adjusts its trading hours when the US changes clocks, so that its session keeps lining up with Wall Street. American investors who follow Brazilian stocks should check the current schedule each March and November rather than relying on a fixed hour.

The small time difference makes Brazil a natural nearshore partner for US companies. A 9-to-5 day in New York is 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM in São Paulo in winter and 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM in summer, so the two cities share almost the whole working day. Overnight flights between São Paulo and New York take about ten hours. Brazilian communities in Newark's Ironbound, Framingham in Massachusetts and South Florida make the same trip for family visits. For Buenos Aires, on the same offset, see Argentina to Eastern time.

Frequently asked questions

Does Brazil still have daylight saving time?
No. Brazil abolished daylight saving in 2019 and keeps UTC−3 in Brasília Time all year.
Is Manaus on the same time as São Paulo?
No. Manaus uses UTC−4, one hour behind São Paulo, which in the northern summer puts it on the same clock as New York.
Why does B3 change its trading hours in March and November?
To stay aligned with US markets when the US switches between standard and daylight time, since Brazil no longer changes its own clocks.
How many hours ahead of New York is São Paulo in December?
Two hours. In December New York is on EST (UTC−5) and São Paulo on UTC−3.
