Yards to Meters
One yard is exactly 0.9144 meters, so multiply yards by 0.9144 to get meters: 10 yd is 9.144 m and 100 yd is 91.44 m.
1 yard = 0.9144 meters
1 yd = 0.9144 m · multiply by 0.9144
The yard that defines the others
The yard is the unit the 1959 international agreement actually fixed. Representatives of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa agreed that one yard equals exactly 0.9144 m, and the inch, foot and mile were then derived from it. Before that, the British yard was based on a bronze bar in London and the US yard on a ratio to the meter, and they differed by a few parts per million.
A yard is 3 feet or 36 inches, so all of those convert with the same exact factor, and since 1983 the meter behind it is defined by the speed of light.

How to convert yards to meters
m = yd × 0.9144
1 yd = 0.9144 m
25 yd × 0.9144 = 22.86 m
- Start with the value in yards.
- Multiply it by 0.9144.
- Round the result to the precision the job needs: whole numbers for everyday use, more decimals for engineering or recipes.
Sports measured in yards
American football is played on a field 100 yd long between the goal lines, which is 91.44 m, and 120 yd including both end zones, 109.73 m. A first down needs 10 yd, 9.14 m. Golf courses in the US and UK give hole lengths in yards on the scorecard: a 400-yard par 4 is 365.8 m, and a 150-yard approach is 137.2 m.
Cricket's pitch is 22 yd between the stumps, 20.12 m, a length inherited from the old surveyor's chain. American college and high-school swimming still uses 25-yard pools, 22.86 m, so times from those pools cannot be compared directly with 25 m or 50 m pools.
Fabric by the yard, and the 9% trap
Quilting and dressmaking fabric in the US is cut by the yard, while patterns and shops elsewhere use meters. Three yards of fabric is 2.74 m; buying 3 m when a pattern calls for 3 yd leaves a small surplus, but buying 3 yd for a 3 m pattern leaves you 26 cm short.
That is the general trap: a yard looks close to a meter but is about 8.6% shorter. Treating them as equal works for a rough guess and fails for anything you have to cut or order. For the reverse, see meters to yards.
Frequently asked questions
- How many meters are in a yard?
- A yard is 0.9144 m, or 91.44 cm, exactly.
- How long is a football field in meters?
- An American football field is 91.44 m between goal lines and 109.73 m including the end zones.
- What is 200 yards in meters for golf?
- 200 yd is 182.88 m, a typical long-iron or fairway-wood distance for amateur golfers.
- Is a 25-yard pool shorter than a 25 m pool?
- Yes. 25 yd is 22.86 m, so each length is 2.14 m shorter and race times are faster than in a metric pool.
- How many meters of fabric is 2.5 yards?
- 2.5 yd is 2.286 m. Round up to 2.3 m when buying, since fabric shops cut to the next 10 cm.
