Meters to Yards
A meter is about 1.0936 yards, so multiply meters by 1.0936, or divide by the exact 0.9144, to get yards: 100 m is 109.36 yd and 50 m is 54.68 yd.
1 meter = 1.09361 yards
1 m = 1.09361 yd · divide by 0.9144
Metric sports seen in yards
Sprinting switched from yards to meters at most competitions in the 1960s and 1970s, and the old 100-yard dash is still remembered in the US. The 100 m is 109.36 yd, so a 100 m runner covers the length of a football field plus about 9 yards. The 400 m lap is 437.4 yd, a little short of a quarter mile.
Soccer pitches are often 105 × 68 m in professional stadiums, which is 114.8 × 74.4 yd. FIFA's laws allow a range, and US high-school fields are often marked in yards instead, so the same game can be played on noticeably different areas.
How to convert meters to yards
yd = m ÷ 0.9144
1 m = 1.09361 yd
25 m ÷ 0.9144 = 27.3403 yd
- Start with the value in meters.
- Divide it by 0.9144, which is the same as multiplying by 1.09361.
- Round the result to the precision the job needs: whole numbers for everyday use, more decimals for engineering or recipes.
Golf rangefinders and course guides
Golfers who learned in yards find metric courses in continental Europe and parts of Asia disorienting, because a 150 m marker means 164 yd, not 150. Many rangefinders and GPS watches can switch units; if yours cannot, adding roughly 10% to a meter distance gives the yardage within a yard or two at typical approach distances. A 120 m shot is 131 yd; a 180 m drive is 197 yd.
The yard is fixed at exactly 0.9144 m by the 1959 agreement, so 1 m is 1/0.9144 yd, 1.0936133… yd. The repeating tail is why converters show a rounded figure.

Buying fabric in a yard store
A sewing pattern written in meters needs a little more yardage than the number suggests. 2 m of fabric is 2.19 yd, so ask for 2 1/4 yd. Rounding 2 m down to 2 yd would leave you 17 cm short. Since meters are longer, the yard figure is always the larger one; if your answer is smaller, you divided the wrong way. For the opposite conversion, use yards to meters, and for feet and inches the unit converter.
