How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the workbook

Add Excel, LibreOffice or Numbers files, up to 20 at a time and 95 MB each. Make sure row 1 of each sheet holds the column names you want as keys.

  2. 2

    Pick the shape and sheets

Array of objects and ISO dates are preselected. Under Advanced settings, switch JSON structure to Array of arrays for a compact file, or Sheets to convert to All sheets for one key per sheet.

  3. 3

    Convert and load

Press Convert to JSON and download. Import the file in your app, seed a database or feed it to a test runner.

An Excel to JSON conversion reads a sheet row by row and writes each row as a JSON object, using the header row as keys. It is how spreadsheet data that a team edits by hand becomes input for an app, an API or a script.

From spreadsheet to code: who converts Excel to JSON

The pattern is always the same: people who are comfortable in Excel own the data, and software needs to read it. A marketing team keeps product names and prices in a workbook that a static site builds from. A localization team fills a sheet with one column per language that the app loads as translation files. A QA lead lists test cases in rows that Postman's collection runner or a Jest suite reads as a JSON data file.

Writing those exports by hand is slow and error prone, and Excel has no built-in Save as JSON option. Converting gives developers a clean file without asking colleagues to learn a new tool. When the target is a relational database rather than application code, Excel to SQL writes INSERT statements instead, which skips the JSON step entirely.

How many rows one sheet can turn into

1,048,576rows in one XLSX sheet, so up to 1,048,575 JSON objects after the header row

Older .xls files stop at 65,536 rows per sheet.

Array of objects or array of arrays

Default

Array of objects

Each row becomes an object whose keys are the header names.

  • Self-describing: each value carries its column name
  • Easy to read in code as row.email
  • Larger, because keys repeat on every row
Best for: Apps, APIs, seed data and fixtures
Compact

Array of arrays

Each row becomes a plain list of values; the header is the first list.

  • Smallest file
  • Matches how charting libraries take rows
  • Code must know which position holds which column
Best for: Large tables, charts and data transfer
Two rows of a price sheet as an array of objects
[
  { "sku": "A-100", "name": "Notebook", "price": 4.5, "updated": "2026-10-18" },
  { "sku": "A-101", "name": "Pen, blue", "price": 1.2, "updated": "2026-10-12" }
]

Types follow the cells. Numbers stay numbers, text stays text, empty cells are written as null in the object form, and dates become ISO strings because JSON has no date type of its own. Blank rows inside the data and stray notes below the table become objects too, so delete them in the workbook before converting.

XLSX and JSON at a glance

XLSX

Microsoft Excel workbook

XLSX is Microsoft Excel's default workbook format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard. It stores multiple sheets, formulas, formatting, charts, pivot tables and data validation in a ZIP package of XML. It supports over a million rows per sheet and is the default exchange format for business spreadsheets. Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers open XLSX, though macros and advanced features may not carry over.

JSON

JavaScript Object Notation

JSON is a lightweight text format for structured data, popularised by Douglas Crockford in the early 2000s and standardised as RFC 8259 and ECMA-404. It represents objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans and null with simple, readable syntax. It is the default format for web APIs, configuration files and data exchange between apps in almost every programming language. It has no comments, dates or schemas built in, and large nested files are hard to read without a viewer.

People convert Excel to JSON when a sheet maintained by non-developers, such as prices, translations or test data, has to be loaded by code.

Convert Excel to JSON: FAQ

How do I convert XLSX to JSON with my headers as keys?

Keep First row is header switched on, which is the default. The text in row 1 becomes the key for every value below it, so a column headed email produces "email": "..." in each object. Rename headers in Excel first if you want different keys, for example camelCase names for JavaScript.

Why do Excel dates come out as numbers like 46313?

Excel stores a date as a serial number counting days from January 1, 1900, and only formats it as a date on screen. Read raw, 2026-10-18 is the number 46313. This page writes dates as ISO strings such as 2026-10-18; pick Unix timestamp under Dates if your code expects seconds.

What happens to formulas, colors and comments?

JSON holds data, not presentation. Each formula cell is written as its calculated result, while fill colors, fonts, cell comments, charts and merged-cell layout are left behind. Keep the workbook as the editable source and regenerate the JSON when it changes.

Can I convert every sheet of a workbook at once?

Yes. With Sheets to convert set to All sheets, the JSON gets one key per sheet name, each holding that sheet's rows. That suits translation files or a catalog split into tabs by category.

Is a large spreadsheet a problem for JSON?

Size grows because every object repeats its keys, so a sheet of 100,000 rows can become a file many megabytes larger than the XLSX. For big tables loaded into analytics tools, CSV or Parquet is lighter; Excel to CSV gives you the flat version.

Which number precision does the JSON keep?

What Excel stored, which is at most 15 significant digits. Long IDs such as 16-digit card or account numbers typed as numbers were already rounded inside Excel. Format those columns as Text before entering data, and they are written as JSON strings.
