Lorem Ipsum Generator
Create placeholder text in the familiar Latin-looking style: choose paragraphs, sentences or words, set how many, and decide whether it opens with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet". The text is assembled in your browser from a built-in word list, so nothing is downloaded or sent.

What it does
Lorem Ipsum Generator produces placeholder Latin-like text by paragraphs, sentences or words, optionally starting with the classic "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet". The words come from a built-in list derived from Cicero's De finibus; nothing is fetched.
12 words, starting with Lorem ipsum
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur adipiscing elit semper lorem anim quam
How the generator builds its text
Pick a unit and a count. Paragraphs (up to 100) contain four to seven sentences each and are separated by a blank line; Sentences (up to 500) run on as one block; Words (up to 5,000) give an exact word count, which is handy when a field or a design brief specifies a length. Every sentence has between 7 and 15 words, starts with a capital, ends with a period and may carry a comma in the middle, so the rhythm resembles real prose rather than a word salad.
With Start with "Lorem ipsum…" ticked, the output opens with the traditional "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit", which tells any reader at a glance that the copy is a placeholder. Untick it for text that blends in. Generate new text reshuffles the words; until you press it, changing the count keeps the same sequence, so a layout does not jump around while you adjust it.
Where lorem ipsum comes from
The text is mangled Cicero. In 45 BC he wrote De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the ends of good and evil"), and section 1.10.32 contains the sentence "Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…", roughly "nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain". The familiar version starts mid-word at "lorem", the tail of dolorem, and continues with words that are cut, reordered or invented, so it is not readable Latin. The source was traced by Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia.
Lorem ipsum became standard in the 1960s, when Letraset printed it on its dry-transfer sheets so designers could rub realistic-looking body copy onto paste-ups. Desktop publishing carried it into the computer age: Aldus PageMaker shipped it as sample text in the 1980s, and today it fills templates, wireframes and themes everywhere. Stories that printers used it as early as the 1500s are often repeated but have no documentary support.
When to use placeholder text, and when not to
Dummy text is useful because it shows the texture of a layout, line lengths, paragraph spacing and how headings sit, without inviting readers to critique the words. Its weakness is that real content is rarely so tidy: names are long, headlines wrap to three lines, languages such as German expand by a third. Test with real or realistic copy before launch, and search the final build for "lorem" so none ships by accident. To check that a block of placeholder text matches a target length, paste it into the Word Counter; for repeated test strings instead, see the Text Tools collection.
Frequently asked questions
- What does lorem ipsum mean in English?
- Nothing as written: it is a scrambled extract, and "lorem" is not a Latin word. The passage it comes from, Cicero's De finibus, discusses pain and pleasure; "dolorem ipsum" means "pain itself".
- How many words are in a generated paragraph of lorem ipsum?
- Between 28 and 105. Each paragraph has four to seven sentences of 7 to 15 words. Choose Words as the unit if you need an exact total.
- Can I generate lorem ipsum without the usual opening line?
- Yes. Untick the Start with "Lorem ipsum…" option and the text begins with randomly chosen words instead of the classic phrase.
- Is lorem ipsum free to use in commercial designs?
- Yes. The underlying text is more than 2,000 years old and in the public domain, and the generated output is yours to use without credit.
- Can leftover lorem ipsum hurt a page in search results?
- Placeholder text gives visitors and search engines nothing useful, and pages full of it look unfinished. Replace it with real copy before a page goes live.
