PDF to Grayscale
Remove color from a PDF so it prints with black toner only, looks consistent on a monochrome printer, and often gets smaller. Choose smooth grayscale for photos or pure black and white for typed text and scans.

Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Images only keeps colored text and links (useful for saving printer ink on photos); text and graphics only leaves photos in color.
Page numbers or ranges separated by commas, e.g. 1-4, 9.
0 keeps the original tones. Positive values darken text and lighten backgrounds of faded scans.
Images above this DPI are downsampled. 150 is fine for reading and office printing.
How to use this tool
- 1
Upload the color PDF
Add up to 20 PDFs, each up to 95 MB. Reports, slide handouts, scans and statements all work.
- 2
Pick grayscale or black and white
Set Convert to to Grayscale or Black & white. Under Advanced settings, choose what to convert, which pages, and the contrast or threshold.
- 3
Convert and print
Press Convert and download the monochrome PDF. Send it to the printer or upload it wherever a black-and-white copy is required.
How do I make a PDF black and white?
Upload it, choose Grayscale or Black & white in Convert to, and press Convert. Grayscale keeps photos smooth; Black & white suits text pages and scans. Text stays selectable and nothing on the page moves.
Why convert a PDF to grayscale
Printing is the most common reason. A slide deck exported with colored backgrounds, a bank statement with a blue header, or a scanned form photographed under warm light all burn color ink and toner even though nobody needs the color. A grayscale PDF tells the printer there is nothing to print but black, which is cheaper per page and avoids the slightly tinted grey you get when a printer mixes colored inks to imitate black.
Consistency is the second reason. Monochrome laser printers and fax machines convert color on the fly, and pale colors such as yellow highlighting or light green table shading can disappear or turn muddy. Converting first lets you check the result on screen, raise the contrast and decide before paper is wasted.
Size is the third. Color images store three channels of data per pixel, grey images one, so a scanned color document can shrink considerably. If a portal sets a strict size limit, convert to grayscale first and then use compress PDF on the result, which keeps more sharpness than compressing a color file to the same size.
The tool changes colors and nothing else. Text remains real, selectable text in its original font, vector charts remain vectors, and links, bookmarks and page sizes are kept as they were.
Grayscale PDF or pure black and white
Shades of grey
Every color becomes a grey of matching lightness, so photos, charts and shading stay readable.
- Contrast from −50 to +50, 0 by default
- Good for photos, slides and mixed documents
- Start from grayscale PDF
Two tones only
Each pixel becomes black or white depending on the Threshold, which gives the crispest text and the smallest images.
- Threshold from 1 to 254, 128 by default
- Good for typed letters, forms and receipts
- Start from PDF to black and white
1 of 3color channels left in a grayscale image
Setting the black and white threshold
- 64
Only dark ink stays black; light print and pencil may vanish
- 128
Default; right for most typed and printed pages
- 160
Rescues faint or faded text from old copies
- 200
Grey paper and shadows start to turn into black speckles
The scale shows Threshold values from 1 to 254 at their position in that range. Each pixel's lightness is compared with the number you choose: darker pixels become black, lighter ones white. Raise it when faint strokes disappear, lower it when the background picks up dots from paper texture or shadows. A small positive Contrast before thresholding often helps photocopies whose black has faded to dark grey.
Convert PDF to grayscale: every option explained
Convert: Everything
The default. Text, drawings and images all lose their color.
Convert: Images only
Photos turn grey while colored text and links keep their color, which saves ink on photo-heavy pages.
Convert: Text & graphics only
Text, lines and charts turn grey and photos stay in color.
Pages
All pages, or Selected pages with a Page range such as 1-4, 9 to leave a color cover untouched.
Contrast
Positive values darken text and lighten the background of faded scans; 0 keeps the original tones.
Reduce image resolution
Off by default. When on, images above the chosen DPI, 150 by default and 72 to 600 allowed, are downsampled.
PDF to grayscale questions
How do I make a grayscale PDF online?
Upload the PDF, leave Convert to on Grayscale and press Convert. Every page, image, text color and drawing is mapped to shades of grey, and the layout, text and links stay exactly where they were.
What is the difference between a grayscale PDF and a black and white PDF?
Grayscale keeps up to 256 shades between black and white, so photos and shaded charts stay readable. Black and white keeps only two values per pixel, which makes typed text very crisp and files very small but turns photos into rough dot patterns.
Does converting a PDF to grayscale save printer ink?
It saves color ink and toner, because the printer receives a document with no color in it. Many printers also print near-black text as a mix of colored inks when it is stored as color; converting first lets them use the black cartridge alone. Print shops and campus printers usually charge less per page for black and white too.
Can I keep the logo in color and make the rest grayscale?
Partly. Convert set to Images only turns photos grey while colored text, lines and links keep their color; Text & graphics only does the reverse. To keep one specific page in color, use Pages with Selected pages and list only the pages to convert.
Why is faint text missing after converting to black and white?
It was lighter than the Threshold, so it became white. Raise the threshold, for example from 128 to 160, so lighter grey pixels turn black, or use Grayscale instead for pages with pencil or very light print.
Will a grayscale PDF be smaller?
Usually, when the file contains color photos or scans, because a grey image stores one channel instead of three. Turn on Reduce image resolution to shrink it further. A PDF that is mostly text changes little, since text takes few bytes in any color.
Can I undo grayscale conversion later?
No. The color information is discarded, and there is no way to recover which shade of grey was red or blue. Keep the color original and convert a copy.
Which page should I use to make a PDF black and white for a scanned document?
Use make PDF black and white, which starts in Black & white mode, or pick that mode here. Check one page after converting: if letters look broken, raise Threshold; if the paper turned grey and speckled, lower it.
