Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Character that separates columns in CSV and text files, for both reading and writing. Auto detects it from the input and writes commas.
UTF-8 works for every language. Choose UTF-8 with BOM if Excel on Windows shows garbled accents or Asian characters when opening the CSV.
Excel, ODS and Numbers input: convert the first sheet only, or every sheet (one CSV per sheet in a ZIP, or one JSON key per sheet).
Name of the sheet tab in the new spreadsheet, up to 31 characters.
Array of objects uses column names as keys for every row; array of arrays is more compact and keeps the header as the first array.
Name of the outer element that wraps all rows; each row becomes a <row> inside it.
Used in CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements. Letters, digits and underscores only.
Quoting and column types differ slightly between databases; pick the one you will import into.
Rewrite date cells in one format. ISO (2026-10-18) is safest for databases and code; keep leaves them as they appear in the source.
How to use this tool
- 1
Upload the JSON file
Drop a .json, .jsonl or .ndjson file onto the upload area. Up to 20 files per batch, 95 MB each; each file becomes its own workbook.
- 2
Check the sheet settings
Convert to is already set to XLSX. Under Advanced settings you can rename the tab with Sheet name or rewrite timestamps through Dates.
- 3
Convert and open in Excel
Press Convert to XLSX (Excel) and download the workbook. It opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers and LibreOffice Calc.
Who needs JSON as an Excel sheet
JSON is the format machines exchange. Douglas Crockford named and popularized it around 2001, and the IETF standard RFC 8259 (2017) defines just six value types: objects, arrays, strings, numbers, true/false and null. REST APIs, Firebase and MongoDB exports, Stripe webhooks and browser developer tools all hand you JSON.
The people who receive those exports often are not developers. A marketing analyst pulls campaign data from an ad platform's API, a store owner downloads orders from a headless shop, a researcher saves a public dataset. They want one record per row, columns to filter and a SUM at the bottom.
Convert JSON to Excel: how records map to rows
[
{"order": "A-1001", "total": 48.5, "customer": {"name": "Ruth Ng", "country": "CA"}, "tags": ["gift", "rush"]},
{"order": "A-1002", "total": 12, "customer": {"name": "Omar Diaz", "country": "US"}}
]The resulting sheet has five columns: order, total, customer.name, customer.country and tags. Row 3 holds A-1002, 12, Omar Diaz and US with an empty tags cell, because the second record had no such key. Missing keys never shift other values sideways, the classic failure of copying JSON into cells by hand.
Numbers stay numeric, so totals add up straight away. Strings that look like numbers, such as ZIP codes or SKUs in quotes, stay text, which protects leading zeros like 02134. For ISO timestamps (2026-10-18T09:30:00Z), pick a readable pattern under Dates.

JSON
JavaScript Object Notation
JSON is a lightweight text format for structured data, popularised by Douglas Crockford in the early 2000s and standardised as RFC 8259 and ECMA-404. It represents objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans and null with simple, readable syntax. It is the default format for web APIs, configuration files and data exchange between apps in almost every programming language. It has no comments, dates or schemas built in, and large nested files are hard to read without a viewer.

XLSX
Microsoft Excel workbook
XLSX is Microsoft Excel's default workbook format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard. It stores multiple sheets, formulas, formatting, charts, pivot tables and data validation in a ZIP package of XML. It supports over a million rows per sheet and is the default exchange format for business spreadsheets. Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers open XLSX, though macros and advanced features may not carry over.

JSON to Excel is how API and database output reaches people who do not read code: a product manager, an accountant or a client who wants rows to sort and totals to check rather than braces and quotes.
What people expect from a JSON to Excel conversion
MythAny JSON file can become a neat table.
FactTables need repeating records. A single configuration object with deeply nested settings turns into one very wide row; for files like that, JSON to YAML is easier to read.
MythExcel will open the .json file directly if I rename it.
FactRenaming changes nothing inside the file. Excel treats it as text and puts everything in column A.
MythThe workbook keeps JSON types exactly.
FactExcel has numbers, text, booleans and empty cells. JSON null becomes an empty cell, and the difference between 12 and 12.0 disappears.
MythAny export under 100 MB will fit.
FactRows count too. A log with two million lines exceeds the 1,048,576-row grid; split it first, or use JSON to CSV for a database load.
JSON to Excel questions
Can I convert JSON to Excel without Power Query?
Yes. Excel's own route is Data → Get Data → From File → From JSON, which opens the Power Query editor and asks you to expand records column by column. Here the expansion happens during the conversion and the workbook arrives ready to filter.
What happens to nested objects in my JSON?
A nested object is spread into extra columns named with a dot path, so an address object becomes address.city and address.zip. An array of plain values inside a record stays in one cell as JSON text, because one row cannot hold a variable number of columns.
Does the converter accept JSON Lines from BigQuery or a log shipper?
Yes. Files ending in .jsonl or .ndjson are read one object per line, which is how BigQuery exports, Elasticsearch dumps and most log pipelines write records. Every line becomes one row in the sheet.
Why did my 19-digit IDs turn into numbers ending in zeros?
Excel stores numbers with 15 significant digits, so a longer integer such as a Twitter snowflake ID or a card number loses its tail when it lands in a numeric cell. Keep such IDs as strings in the JSON (in quotes) and they arrive in the sheet as text, digit for digit.
Is my API export stored anywhere?
No. Files are deleted automatically 30 minutes after processing, and no account is involved.
Can I go back from the spreadsheet to JSON later?
Yes. Once you have edited the rows, run the workbook through Excel to JSON and the column headers become keys again. Dotted column names are written as flat keys, so rebuild nested objects in code if your API expects them.
- Excel to JSON ConverterConvert Excel sheets to JSON online: header row becomes keys, each row an object, dates written as ISO strings. XLSX, XLS, ODS and Numbers accepted.
- Convert JSON to CSVConvert JSON or JSON Lines to CSV: one row per object, nested fields flattened into columns, UTF-8 with BOM so Excel shows accents correctly. 20 files at once.
- XML to Excel ConverterOpen XML invoices, bank statements, product feeds and system exports as an Excel XLSX table. No XML map or Developer tab needed; works for Mac users too.
- CSV to XLSX ConverterConvert CSV to an Excel XLSX workbook with leading zeros, long IDs and accented text intact. Comma, semicolon and tab files detected automatically.
- JSON to YAML ConverterConvert JSON to YAML online for Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, Compose and Ansible files. Indented, quote-safe output, 20 files per batch, no account needed.
- JSON to HTML Table ConverterConvert JSON to an HTML table: keys become column headers, records become rows. Paste it into a CMS, an email or an internal page. No code needed.
