Central to Mountain time
Mountain Time runs one hour behind Central Time in Denver, Albuquerque and Salt Lake City, in summer and winter alike: 4:00 PM in Chicago is 3:00 PM in Denver. Phoenix stays on standard time, so from March to November it is two hours behind Chicago.

Losing and regaining the hour on the road
Drive from Dallas toward the Colorado Rockies and the clock falls back an hour once you leave the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, which are both on Central Time. Kansas City to Denver on Interstate 70 is about nine hours of driving, but you arrive only eight hours later by the clock. Coming home, the hour disappears again, which is worth remembering when you book a hotel check-in or a dinner reservation for the return day.
Flying is quicker: Dallas–Fort Worth to Denver takes roughly two hours, so a noon departure lands around 1:00 PM Mountain, and the Chicago–Denver flight is about two and a half hours.

Saskatchewan, Alberta and the Canadian twist
Canada's prairies show the zones from another angle. Saskatchewan uses Central Standard Time (UTC−6) all year and never changes its clocks. Its neighbor Alberta uses Mountain Time with daylight saving, so in winter Calgary is one hour behind Regina, while in summer Calgary's MDT equals UTC−6 and both cities read the same time.
In the United States, Central and Mountain switch together on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, so Chicago–Denver stays fixed at one hour. Only Arizona and Saskatchewan break the pattern. For a full comparison of Central with Eastern instead, see CST to EST.

Frequently asked questions
- What time is 4 PM Central in Denver?
- It is 3:00 PM in Denver. Subtract one hour from Central time all year.
- Does Saskatchewan keep the same time as Alberta?
- Only in summer. Saskatchewan stays on UTC−6 all year; Alberta moves from UTC−7 in winter to UTC−6 in summer, matching Saskatchewan from March to November.

- One hour on the clock. Kansas City is on Central Time, Denver on Mountain Time, and the change happens near the Colorado–Kansas border.
- Is Albuquerque on Mountain time with daylight saving?
- Yes. New Mexico uses Mountain Time and observes daylight saving, so Albuquerque is always one hour behind Dallas.
- When is a 9 AM Central meeting in Phoenix?
- At 8:00 AM in winter and 7:00 AM from March to November, because Arizona does not observe daylight saving.
