Halloween countdown

Halloween is always October 31, the evening before All Saints' Day. The timer counts down to midnight at the start of October 31 in your time zone, so it hits zero as the day begins, hours before the first trick-or-treaters knock.

Why the date moves

October 31 every year.

What day of the week is Halloween?

Halloween 2026 falls on a Saturday, the best case for parties and trick-or-treating because nobody has school or work the next morning. In 2027 it is a Sunday, in 2028 a Tuesday (the leap day of February 29, 2028 pushes it forward two weekdays), in 2029 a Wednesday and in 2030 a Thursday. Communities in the United States and Canada sometimes hold trunk-or-treat events or school parades on the nearest weekend when October 31 lands midweek, but the date of Halloween itself never moves.

The name is a contraction of All Hallows' Eve. November 1 is All Saints' Day (All Hallows) in the Christian calendar and November 2 is All Souls' Day. Many of the customs, including bonfires and the idea that spirits walk on this night, are traced to Samhain, the Gaelic festival that marked the end of the harvest in Ireland and Scotland. Mexico's Día de Muertos on November 1 and 2 is a separate tradition that happens to fall on the following days.

Halloween and the end of daylight saving time

Halloween sits between the two big autumn clock changes. The European Union and the UK set their clocks back on the last Sunday of October, which in 2026 is October 25, so Halloween in London and Paris arrives on winter time. The United States and Canada fall back on the first Sunday of November, which in 2026 is November 1, the morning right after Halloween. For one week the gap between New York and London is four hours instead of five, which matters if you are calling family or joining an online watch party; the time zone converter shows the correct offset for any date.

A preparation timeline

Costume shops and online stores get busiest in the first two weeks of October, and handmade costumes need even more lead time. Pumpkins for carving are usually harvested from late September; a carved jack-o'-lantern lasts only several days to a week or so before it starts to soften, so most people carve a few days before October 31. If you are counting to a party date or a school event rather than Halloween itself, the days between dates calculator gives the exact gap.
