Why 5 PM Friday
In most of the world the standard working week runs Monday to Friday, and a nine-to-five day makes 5 PM on Friday the moment the weekend begins. The two-day weekend spread in the early 20th century; Henry Ford's factories adopted a five-day, 40-hour week in 1926, and the US Fair Labor Standards Act set the 40-hour standard in 1940. Before that, Saturday was usually a working day or a half day.
Not every country takes the same days off. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and several other Muslim-majority countries have a Friday–Saturday weekend, because Friday is the day of congregational prayer. The United Arab Emirates switched to a Saturday–Sunday weekend in 2022, with government offices closing at midday on Friday. In those places this countdown marks the end of the weekend's first day rather than the end of the week.

Friday begins first in Kiritimati (Christmas Island) in Kiribati, at UTC+14, where the clock reads 5 PM Friday when it is only 03:00 UTC. Kiribati moved its Line Islands across the date line in 1995 so the whole country shares one date. American Samoa at UTC−11 is the last inhabited place to reach Friday, 25 hours later. Its neighbor Samoa jumped the other way at the end of 2011 and skipped Friday, December 30 entirely, going straight from Thursday to Saturday.
