Compress PDF to 20 KB
20 KB is roughly the size of a short email, so a PDF only fits when it is one page, mostly text and stored at screen resolution. This page is set to that target and says plainly when a file cannot get there.

Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Images above this DPI are downsampled. 150 is sharp on screen and fine for office printing; 72 is screen-only.
JPEG quality for re-compressed images. 70 keeps scanned text readable; below 40 artefacts appear around letters.
When aiming for a target size, image quality never drops below this; resolution is reduced instead.
How to use this tool
- 1
Upload a single page
Add the PDF, or up to 20 of them at 95 MB each. Remove extra pages first: every scanned page competes for the same few kilobytes.
- 2
Keep 20 KB and choose gray
Target size is already 20 KB. Tick Convert to grayscale under Images unless the page carries a colored photo the reviewer must see.
- 3
Compress and zoom in
Press Compress, open the result at 100% and read the smallest line on the page. If it is legible, upload it; if not, see the options below.
Where a 20 KB PDF limit shows up
Limits this small were designed for images. Indian recruitment forms, including those of the Staff Selection Commission, have long asked for the scanned signature as a JPEG of roughly 10–20 KB, and some state and university portals reuse that field size for small PDFs: a signed declaration, an undertaking or a thumb-impression sheet. The portal rejects anything with more bytes than the number printed next to the button.
At 100 KB the tool trims a scan until it fits. At 20 KB it has to discard most of the page's pixels, so the result depends on the page. Typed text, plain paper and dark, sharp ink are cheap. Shadows, a tinted background, a crumpled sheet or a photo stapled to the corner are expensive.
How many pixels a 20 KB page keeps
| in | Pixels at | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| 72 DPI | 150 DPI | 300 DPI | |
| A4 width, 8.27 | 595 | 1240 | 2480 |
| A4 height, 11.69 | 842 | 1754 | 3508 |
| Letter width, 8.5 | 612 | 1275 | 2550 |
| Letter height, 11 | 792 | 1650 | 3300 |
| ID-1 card width, 3.37 | 243 | 506 | 1011 |
A page scanned at 300 DPI is about 2480 × 3508 pixels. At 72 DPI the same page is 595 × 842 pixels, which is also the size of an A4 page in PDF points, the unit the format has used since Adobe published it in 1993. Ghostscript's /screen preset downsamples to 72 DPI for the same reason, and it is where a 20 KB budget starts to work for a full grayscale page.
With Target size set, UltKit re-encodes every image and checks the result against 20 KB. It lowers JPEG quality first, down to Lowest image quality, then reduces resolution. Remove metadata and Subset fonts are on by default and matter more here than anywhere else on the ladder: a few kilobytes of XMP data or a fully embedded font can be a fifth of the allowance. The guide to scanning documents to PDF covers scanner app settings that keep a page small from the start.
When a PDF cannot reach 20 KB
Multi-page and color files rarely make it
If a three-page color scan comes back above 20 KB, the tool stopped before the text became unreadable. Convert to grayscale, keep only the page the field asks for, or check whether the field accepts a JPG, where compress image to 20 KB lets you crop tighter.
20 KB PDF questions
Is it actually possible to get a scanned PDF down to 20 KB?
For one page of printed text in grayscale, usually yes: the page ends up near 72–100 DPI, readable on screen. A color photo page or a dense handwritten form typically cannot reach 20 KB and stay legible.
Why does a PDF made in Word compress so much better than a scan?
Word stores letters as text plus a font, a few kilobytes per page; a scan stores the page as a picture of millions of pixels. With Subset fonts on, only the characters you used stay embedded, so a typed one-page declaration often lands near 20 KB unchanged.
The form asks for a 20 KB file but my PDF is two pages. What now?
Check whether the field expects both pages; many small fields want only the signed one. If both are needed, use grayscale and accept a lower resolution, or look for a second upload field for the other page.
Should I lower the Lowest image quality setting for a 20 KB target?
It can. Quality never drops below Lowest image quality (30 by default); after that the tool reduces resolution. Setting it to 15 or 20 keeps more pixels with stronger artefacts, which some scans tolerate better than blur.
My portal wants between 10 KB and 20 KB. Can a file end up too small?
Yes, a text-only PDF can fall below a minimum. If the result is under 10 KB, upload the original typed file or use the PDF size increaser, which pads a file to a minimum without changing the visible page.
Will 20 KB keep a signature recognizable?
Dark ink on white paper survives grayscale and low resolution because it is high contrast. Faint blue ballpoint does not: sign with a black pen and scan in good light.
