Compress JPEG to 20 KB
A 20 KB JPEG is about the size of a short email, so every byte has to go to the picture. This page targets 20 KB with JPEG output and finds the highest quality that fits.
Compress Image
or drop JPG, JPEG, JFIF … files here ·
Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Never shrink below this width when downscaling. 0 means no minimum.
Optionally set the dimensions before compressing. Forms that specify pixels as well as KB need both.
Pixels for the side you chose above.
The search for the target size will not go below this quality; it downscales instead.
4:2:0 halves color resolution and saves a lot on photos; 4:4:4 keeps sharp edges on text, logos and screenshots.
Lossy PNG quantises colors (like TinyPNG) and is far smaller; lossless keeps every pixel.
How to use this tool
- 1
Add the JPG, PNG or phone photo
Drop one file or up to 20. HEIC, PNG and WebP inputs come out as JPEG because Output format is set to JPG.
- 2
Leave the target at 20 KB
Target size reads 20 and Unit reads KB. If the form also lists exact pixels, use Resize first under Advanced settings.
- 3
Compress and check the number
Press Compress to JPG and compare the size on the result with the form's window before you upload.
Set the target to 20 KB, keep JPG as the output, and the tool lowers quality first and pixel size second until the file is at or just under 20 KB.
Who asks for a JPEG under 20 KB
The 20 KB ceiling shows up most often on Indian recruitment and bank exam forms. IBPS asks for a signature of 140 × 60 px between 10 and 20 KB, next to a photo of 200 × 230 px between 20 and 50 KB, both as JPEG. SSC uses a 10–20 KB window for the signature too. For a signature, the signature compressor keeps pen strokes crisper with 4:4:4 color.
Older HR systems and school portals also cap avatars around 20 KB and simply reject anything larger, often with a generic "invalid file" message. They want JPEG because every upload library has decoded it reliably since the standard (ITU-T T.81, also ISO/IEC 10918-1) was published in 1992. If any image type is allowed, the general 20 KB image page can keep PNG or WebP.
How many pixels a 20 KB JPEG can hold
- 140 × 60
Signature strip. Fits with quality to spare, often well under 10 KB.
- 200 × 230
Exam photo size. Usually fits at high quality with no downscaling.
- 400 × 500
Portrait for a profile. Fits at medium quality; fine detail softens.
- 640 × 800
Quality falls near the floor; skin and hair start to block.
- 1000 px+
Will not fit as a photo; the tool scales it down instead.
Where the bytes go inside a small JPEG
A phone photo carries an EXIF block with the camera model, date, GPS position and an embedded preview thumbnail. The EXIF segment can be up to 64 KB by design, so on its own it can exceed your whole budget. Strip metadata is on by default and removes it before the size search starts.
The remaining overhead, quantization and Huffman tables, takes a few hundred bytes. After that, size depends on detail. A plain wall is cheap; a patterned shirt, foliage or noise from a dim room is expensive, which is why two photos of the same pixel size land at different quality levels.
The tool searches quality from high to low and stops at the best value that fits, never below Lowest quality allowed (40 by default). If the file is still too big, Allow downscaling reduces the width in steps, and Minimum width stops it where the form requires. More methods are in how to reduce image size in KB.
Do and don't for a 20 KB JPG
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Crop tightly to the face or signature before compressing | Rename a .png or .heic file to .jpg; the form reads the content, not the name |
| Shoot against a plain, evenly lit background | Compress the same JPEG twice in a row; artifacts stack up |
| Set exact pixels with Resize first when the form lists them | Upscale a tiny image to look sharper; it only adds blur |
| Keep the original photo in case you need a different size later | Screenshot the photo to shrink it; that adds borders and lowers detail |
JPEG to 20 KB questions
Why is my 20 KB JPEG shown as 21 KB on another computer?
Some systems count a kilobyte as 1,000 bytes, others as 1,024, and Windows Explorer rounds up to the next whole KB. If the portal is strict, set Target size to 19 to leave a margin.
Can a 12-megapixel phone photo really become 20 KB?
Yes, but not at 4032 × 3024 px. The tool first lowers quality to the floor set in Lowest quality allowed, then scales the picture down until the target fits. A typical portrait ends up around 400–600 px wide.
Is a progressive JPEG accepted on government forms?
Progressive files are standard JPEG, open everywhere and are often slightly smaller. A few older upload checks accept only baseline files; if a correctly sized file is rejected, turn off Progressive JPG and compress again.
Should the 20 KB JPEG be color or grayscale?
Keep color unless the instructions ask for black and white. JPEG already stores color at reduced resolution, so dropping it saves a modest share of the file, not half.
What if the form wants the file between 15 and 20 KB?
Set Target size to 19 KB. The result lands at or just under the target, which keeps most photos above 15 KB. If a flat, simple image comes out smaller, raise Lowest quality allowed.
